GCC doesn't do 8-bit, but I think there's a "LCC" compiler that does the
Z80.

GCC does _some_ 8-bit. IIRC, at least the 6811 and 6502.
Dunno about the Z80, though. That said, lcc might be a better
"jumping off" point for rolling your own C compiler for a
small machine. (This is not an insult to gcc. I did one gcc
re-target, and was very glad to be able to use it instead of
PCC, as the original project-plan intended. Nonetheless, gcc
is an ambitious undertaking, and a bit daunting for the
first-time compiler-writer wannabe :-)

Also, am I mistaken in believing that the 180 has
"on-board bank-switching" of some sort. If so, I wouldn't
hold my breath for a gcc re-target to it. gcc believes
in its bones in linear, "big bag o' bytes" address-spaces.

is there anyway to get the Memotech ROMS and get your target processor to work these as there is a very good assembler initiated by typing Assem 10 don't know if this is what you want but might be worth a try.
