We've been running elm for some time in house under the development
versions of 4.0 and we will make it available on mwcbbs and cohware Vol3.

I'll warn users of comb now that the mailbox format of 4.0 has been
changed to use SCO's MMDF format (message begin and end with 4 ctrl-A's).
Comb will most likely not handle this. I doubt that pcmail will also
get along with the changed format.

A 'size' of elm on Coherent 4.0 (beta) shows: 135488+51288+61024

Have you tried to port mmdf2 to Coherent yet?

We're a big MMDF site here and I've been wondering if that'll work on
Coherent instead of Smail2.5...

No, we haven't tried mmdf2. The reason for the format change was to accomodate
elm (we could have converted elm to use our 3.x.x format, but we want to be
as systemV-ish without going overboard as possible).

Have any problem porting Elm under Coherent?

A minor fix to Comb 1.32 should keep it happy, it already speaks the current
3.2 format of two ctrl-A's so doubling that to 4 shouldn't be difficult.

There were a few problems, but they were due to the fact that when elm was
ported, 4.0 wasn't much more than a 32 bit version of 3.2, with some
binary compatibility with character based coff binaries. Since then,
4.0 has developed to the point where the problems wouldn't exist if a
fresh port were done today.

Stick with smail 2.5. It is easier to deal with than mmdf2. When Coherent
gets networking support, smail 3.1 will do the job.

No, if you want to be System Vish use the standard From line. The ^A stuff
is an MMDFism not System Vism. The ^A stuff was a large pain in the A##
here when we put MMDF2 up. The elm mods to support it were hacked and tested
here. Better to be straight SysV and skip the ^A stuff entirely.

The 2 lines of 4 ^A's is totally an MMDF hack and shouldn't be propagated
into Coherent unless you're going to port the MMDF too...
