Please advise/point me on following 2.0R install problems:

Configuration is: 250 mb FreeBSD on 408mb wd0, 899cyls, 4mb ram, 486sx.
MBR slice #3, after msdos primary and secondary (ver 6.22), FreeBSD
partitions made and assigned as: a 24mb /, b 16mb swap, g 200mb /usr,
and h 10mb /var.

Problem #1 My /var directory is always empty, and system reports many
errors relating to its (and its subdirectories/files) absence. A study
of O'Reilly's E.S.A. book says that "pass number" field values should
be sequential ( 1 2 3 ) NOT all the same ( 1 ) as mine. Afraid to alter.
This is in the file /etc/fstab. Also, what is /etc/fstab.wb (sp. ?)

Problem #2 When rebooting off boot floppy disk to investigate/fix
above problem, running Disklabel "forgets" all FreeBSD partition mount
points (only). So I have to re Assign, Write, Quit and proceed to
install all binaries from scratch. Another way to just view partitions?

Problem #1 addenda The /usr partition and mount point seem quite OK.

Problem #3 Only snafu I see during installation is warning message just
after telling system to delete /usr/temp, that I don't have a /usr/temp!

Problem #4 Other snafu is choice of adding "guest" account. Quick screen
of ominous messages disappearing too quickly bakc to "Config Menu".

Problem #5 Saw BRIEF message at reboot about "resizing wd1 d partition"
?? I never
ver incorporated wd1 into install (although I have one and it has
some unallocated cylinders).

Problem #6 Upon rebooting (and after problem #5 message) system takes me
back into "need to use FTP, NFS ... to get a bindist onto your ... "
AGAIN !?

Problem #7 When I run fsck ... Phase 5 - Check Cyl Groups reports:
CLEAN FLAG IS WRONG IN SUPERBLOCK FIX? I always answer y, but it remains.

Problem #8 When rebooting, boot prompt includes "Use ? for file list or
press Enter for defaults", being curious I tap ?, get a report, but at
next Boot: prompt it responds with "Invalid format!" no matter what.

PLEASE EXCUSE MY IGNORANCE FOR USING THIS NEWSGROUP TO ASK THESE.

PLEASE DIRECT ME TO THE CORRECT TEXT FILE(S), NEWS GROUPS, OR EMAIL
CONTACT(S) TO RESOLVE THESE.

In article <3uq0mf$m4f$1...@perth.DIALix.oz.au>, cwtu...@perth.DIALix.oz.au says...

First, of all, install 2.0.5R if you can.

Did you specify a separate /var partition during install? Is it being mounted?

Doesn't matter.

No, that feature just isn't there.

Are you sure that the install didn't make one for the install process?

>Problem #5 Saw BRIEF message at reboot about "resizing wd1 d partition"

FreeBSD detects it anyways.

>Problem #6 Upon rebooting (and after problem #5 message) system takes me

>AGAIN !?

This only happens if the bindist was never installed correctly. As soon as the
new bindist is installed, it wipes out that message.

>Problem #7 When I run fsck ... Phase 5 - Check Cyl Groups reports:

In use filesystems are not clean. In use filesystems should not really be fsck'ed
either.

>Problem #8 When rebooting, boot prompt includes "Use ? for file list or
>press Enter for defaults", being curious I tap ?, get a report, but at

I don't see this, but I don't have any 2.0R machines anymore.
