Hi all

We have our application using COM. We now want to port to CORBA. Please
suggest us if there are any full fledged IDE for CORBA object development.
Also suggest us the best ORB available in the mraket (We currently have
thought about usign visigenic's visibroker orb)

Thanks
Uma

Hi Uma :

1) IDE for CORBA ? What are you expecting from an IDE for CORBA ? As far as
I know, I don't think there are any IDEs for CORBA objects development as
there are for Enterprise Java Beans.

2) Regarding evaluation of ORBs it depends on what are your
requirements!!! In my experience
a) Orbix is relatively difficult to configure but has lot of runtime
options. Where as Visibroker is very easy to use and much more stable than
Orbix.
b) If you wish to do multithreaded development, IMHO, with all due respect
to Iona, avoid Orbix. We experienced many problems in our products with it.
Getting timely, effective techhnical
support from Ioan is next to impossible.
c) If you want to compare the prices of the two, Visibroker is way too
expensive compared to Orbix. There is also runtime associated with Visibroker
when you are deploying your product.
d) I personally feel that Visiborker's performance is better than Orbix's.
I don't have subtantial figures or any papaers to back it up. But I've read
some articles comapring the performances of some commercial ORBs which gave
more merit to Visibroker than Orbix in terms of performance.
e) Finally figure out what are the requirements of the problem in the
domain in which your application is.
f) You can always download the trial versions of both and try it out
yourself.

I don't have any experience with any other ORBs. Probably there are some
other ORBs which suit your problem better than these two. And finally, we
switched from Orbix to Visibroker.

Hope this helps,
Saradhi Sreegiriraju.

Actually, Inprise makes VisiBroker and Borland Delphi, C++Builder, and JBuilder.

Here is info on "Visual RAD for CORBA" in C++Builder:
http://www.borland.com/bcppbuilder/tour/newfeatures/?newfeatures

Here is info on "Visual RAD for CORBA" in JBuilder:

Edwin.

: I believe Symantec VisualCafe has some integration for Orbix (i.e. has some
: project wizards that generate default implementations for your stubs and
: skeletons). Orbix 3 also has a code generation toolkit which uses customizable Tcl
: scripts to generate your code.

Perhaps you are referring to OrbixBuilder. It is classified as an
enterprise RAD at the Black & White web site
http://www.blackwhite.com/products/products.html

The documents there say it works with VisualCafe, Visual C++ and UIM/X.

Best wishes.

Symantec just released VisualCafe Enterprise. In addition to distributed
debugging it has wizards for building CORBA (&RMI) servants and clients from IFR
info, IDL files, and Java interface/class definitions. Currently VisiBroker and
OrbixWeb are supported.
