Hi everyone!

I am having some problems and have search as much as I could to find
out what's wrong but I'm totally stumped by the situation. I'm posting
to various newsgroups with the hope that someone will be able to
provide some answers or point me in the right direction. The problem
is a bit hard to explain but I'll do my best. If you have any
questions, please feel free to post to the newsgroup & email me.

I'm using Windows 98 & downloaded lots of mp3s & mpg files ;) However,
one day I noticed that some of these mp3 files were overwritten with
contents of other mp3 files. In some cases, a certain portion of the
file would be OK and the rest of it would just be replaced by parts of
another song. Or, in some files, a certain portion of song is ok and
then it's just blank. The file size is ok.

Let's say that my original mp3 file was 4 minutes in length. Then this
could be the scenario: first 1 minute of the song is ok but the
remaining 3 min would be just blank or replaced/overwritten some other
song. So, the length of the original song is preserved, just that the
remaining portion is junk. Or, it could even be that the whole
file/song is like that.

Another pattern I've noticed with such "corrupted" files is that I
cannot copy them. I get this error message:
"Cannot copy <file name>: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not
full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use."
..and no, my disk isn't full. the files are not read-only. the files
are not currently being played either.

Then, with mpg files, some of them will just not open. I get the
following message in Windows Media Player:
"Cannot open. Please verify that the path and filename are correct
and try again. (Error=80070005)"

...But this doesn't make any sense because I have viewed these files
earlier at some point. And, they're just on my hard drive, so why
should it be asking about verifying path?

Now, it's not that all my mp3 or mpg files are corrupted. Just some of
them seem to be. So, I have no idea. I have Norton AntiVirus on my
computer & I highly doubt that it's something to do with a virus.

So, if anyone has any ideas or knowledge about this then PLEASE get in
touch with me. This is really baffles me.

Thanks for your time,
Jess

Have you tried running Disk Doctor, Chkdsk or similar? You definitely have a
problem with your file system. It's possible that all you need is to run one
of these babies.
