Any tips on the above would be great =)

Chaos 8Mb soundfont has the best sax sounds IMHO.
You'll find it amongst the Collections at Hammersound.
(Make sure you get the 8Mb version not the 4 or 12).
If you can't find it get back to me and I'll send a link.
Here's a sample:

I think you would be pushing shit up a hill to find any decent Soundfont
based sax samples.
However, there is a *great* layered Alto Sax combinator in Reason. It is
called "Late nite sax". After-touch expression, several velocity layers
etc. It is very realistic, to the point where others remark on the
quality of the sounds.
If you rewire Reason into your DAW you can use it alongside your VST
instruments.
Sounds good - though I don't have Reason =). Is there anyway just the late
nite sax sample can be converted, e.g. with extreme sample converter?
Thanks
There's Linplug Saxlab 2, but I find it very unstable when played
alongside audio tracks (memory protection failure that causes BSODs).

Better than your ordinary GM sound module, but still it does at times
sound like squashed chicken.
There is of course, the obvious fact that you have to play it like a
saxophone and not like a keyboard player, so hardly a second of
straight pure note. Those expression wheels and aftertouch will be
worn out pretty soon.

Now it's the other instruments that sound like an old Bontempi keyboard! :)
I'm quite happy (though not extatic of course) with DVS Saxophone, a
freeware VST I found googling around. At least it's stable in Realband
so I can solo around my arrangements.
Store them and sell the samples online as someone will be going for
the Bontempi retro sound soon ..(looks at watch).. any minute now! ;-)
Bit late for a reply, but I thought I'd put in my 2 cents worth.
Unless your very familiar with the way a sax player would bend the
notes and control the vibrato you will be hard pushed to get any
sample to sound like a proper sax. A good MIDI alternative to a
keyboard would be a wind controller. I use a Yamaha Wx7 which can be
used to record directly into your sequencer, it's another learning
curve but can produce some good results.
I use a WX7, alto sax, tenor sax and keyboards with my band and though
the WX7 is plugged into the same MIDI sound module and therefore has
the same sound set as the keyboard, there are several wind based
instruments that sound better when played on the WX7 purely because
they are played in the same way as a sax would. Also I am a far better
sax player than a keyboard player :(
