I've an AWE 64 soundcard (512 kb memory) and I'm currently using the GS
synthesizer with the original Soundfont supplied by Creative Labs
(SYNTHGS.SF2). In my opinion, most of the instruments sound pretty cool
but the overdrive/distortion guitars are really ugly. I've downloaded
some Metallica midi files, which are quite good but these instruments do
not match the real sound at all. After this, I put two frogs into the
speakers and even got better results :) .
I couldn't solve the problem changing some options in the AWE control
panel or modifying synthesizer related stuff with Vienna SF Studio.
Can somebody help me to get a really cool heavy metal guitar (new
Soundfont or samples to replace distortion/overdrive guitars in the
original SYNTHGS.SF2) ?
Thanks in advance
Tobias
Try the AWE HotSpot at http://www.lysator.liu.se/awe/
Go to the FTP area and klick "Soundfonts".
There you have loads of them, including distorted guitars!

Hi,
I know the 2M & 8M SF2 from Emu is cool. Can check with EMu on this
files or check the CD that comes with your card to see whether is this
two file inside.
The name is "2gmgsmt.sf2" & 8mbgmsfx.sf2

I created my own distortion guitar sound font. It's BIG (over 1 MB), but
it sounds very good. I cannot send it to you because I do not have e-mail.
If you know of a place I can ftp it for free, I will try that. Otherwise,
you could follow these instructions to create it yourself:
1. Download Goldwave wave file editor. You should be able to download a
free trial version from the Internet. That's all you'll need.
2. Create a new MIDI file. Use the Jazz Guitar sound, and play one
sustained note for each string: E below low C, A below low C, low D, low
G, low B, E above middle C, and add a couple of higher notes. Let each
individual note play out completely before the next note starts. (I used a
separate midi file for each note.)
3. Record each note as a wave file. The method for doing this will vary
depending on what software you use.
4. For each wave file: Load the file into Goldwave. In the effects
window is the choice "Distortion." In the drop down list box of distortion
type "Noise." Trim up the wave file.
5. Load these wave files into Vienna Sound Font Studio, and follow the
instructions for creating a Soundfont. If you need instructions for that,
repost, and I'll give them.
That's it. It sounds more complicated than it is; it just takes a little
time. But it's well worth it. It's the most realistic guitar Soundfont
I've heard. And it's completely free!
Hope this helps.
