The SC-88 is the older, discontinued model. Afaik they are
electronically equivalent (same sounds, effects, output stage, midi
connectrions), but the SC-88 has a number of extra buttons to tweak
parameters that can only be reached via midi controller and sysex
messages on the SC-88VL.

Hi all,

As a SC user myself, I'm affiliated to the SCUG mailing list. The
question rose
some time ago, the response is somewhere included in this post (sorry,
it's
long, I kept the original message - watch for [**]). But, you can read
there that the SC88-VL is programmable, but not from
the front panel.

Dear Daniel,

I have an SC-88VL myself. In front of me I also have a spec list for the
SC-88. From a quick look the main differences seem to be:

Dimensions:
Size: same Width (218mm) and Depth (250) but the SC-88 has a Depth of
72mm whereas the VL is only 48.
Weight: 2.6 Kg (88) 1.4 Kg (VL)

Both have 32 MIDI channels over two Ports with MIDI In A, MIDI In B
(option of either front or rear) and a further MIDI socket assignable as
either MIDI Out or Thru.
Max. Polyphony is 64 notes in both.

Both have 654 presets + 22 drumsets (described as 24 in the VL blurb,
but
in practice it's 22) spread over two maps: the SC-88 map and the SC-55
map (incorporating the CM-64 map). The SC-88 map also has 256 locations
reserved for User instruments. These are created by selecting a patch
from any of the 654 presets, tweaking certain parameters and then saving
the result in GS variations 064 or 065. There are also two User Drumset
locations (GS variations 065 and 066 on the SC-88 map) on which you can
assemble your own custom Drumset by selecting any Drum sound from any of
the 22 preset Drumsets, again tweaking various parameters (and to be
honest you can change the sound a lot more than you can with the User
Instruments; this, for me is one of the best things about this module),
you can mix 'n' match drum sounds from different source drumsets onto
one
User Drumset, say take a snare from the "Kick & Snare" set, a brush slap
from the "Brush" set, timpani from the "Orchestral" set, etc. etc. and
assemble them all (along with another 70 or so sounds) into your very
own
User Drumset. VERY useful indeed!

[**] In fact this is the main answer to your question; apart from the
size the
main difference that I know of between the SC-88 and the VL is that, as
I
understand it, the first has front panel controls for using the User
Instruments/Drumsets, so that you can do your editing without even
switching your computer on, whereas the SC-88VL does not have these
buttons. Roland do not tell you this! [**]
I bought my VL a few months ago and
after playing with it for a while I started looking for the fabled User
Instruments. I eventually found out through a corner of the manual that
in order to access these I'd need some computer software as this was the
only way of getting at this feature of the module. "Fine" I thought, "if
Roland say you can do it the software must exist!" Some weeks of
searching the Internet later I realised that it didn't exist.
If you've been following the SCUG list over the past couple of months
you'll know that it does now. I was so frustrated at not being able to
use these exciting-sounding facilities that I taught myself to use the
program "Winsysex" and wrote a profile for the SC-88VL. I had lots of
help from Mike Le Voi, also of this list and eventually we managed to
come up with a profile which, when used with "Winsysex v.3" allows you
to
get at ALL of the features of the SC-88VL. I know of no other easy way
of
editing the User features on this module. I should point out that as I'm
a PC user and "Winsysex" is a "Windows 3.11" based program my profile
only exists for this platform.

To the best of my knowledge these are the only significant differences
between the two modules: you get the same sounds, effects, polyphony,
MIDI facilities (there is a built-in computer interface which, when used
with the Serial Driver available for download on Roland's website allows
you access to all 32 MIDI channels through a single connection) and
editing. I believe the VL is slightly cheaper and if you're a PC user
and
are happy to do your editing from the computer screen I'll be happy to
send you a copy of my profile.
If you are new to this list you may not have heard that Roland are
releasing a new version called the SC-88 Pro in Japan soon- it sounds as
though it's even bigger and better than the SC-88 and VL. It'll be more
expensive too of course.

I assume your question is because you're thinking of buying one of these
modules and wonder which one? My advice would be to look at the
difference in price between the two in your part of the world (where are
you?), if it's small get the SC-88 but if it's significant (and you have
a PC...) get the VL and mail me asking for a copy of the profile, it
removes all the differences between the two.
I hope this answers your question, in part at least. Feel free to
contact
me if you have any other questions- or would like a copy of the profile.

Best wishes
