There are indeed (very few yet) some USB MIDI interfaces on the market.
On the other hand, there are numerous MIDI interfaces that plug in the
parallel port and a few in the serial. We bundle a serial-port MIDI interface
(no power-adapter required) with our ShowPlay MIDI file player for musicians.
The interesting extra is that it also provides a footswitch jack that allows
playback control and paging through lyrics/tablatures (yes, ShowPlay supports
these and LOTS of other things).

The USB has had less than fireworsk reports so far, from these groups.
Go for parallel or serial port ones. I would prefer Paralle, from what
I have read, and use one (a MUsic Quest/Opcode 2 port SE) with no
apparent problems. There is one problem,...no WIn 98 drivers. The Win
95 ones seem to work OK fro me.
