Hi,

After a seemingly successful installation of QuickTime 2.0
for Windows, I am unable to play any QT movies including
the one supplied with QT (sample.mov) . When I start the
QT movie Player and load a movie, the following message
appears:

PLAYER caused a General Protection Fault in module
DHIO_DH.QTC at 0002:0421

Had anyone else run into this problem? Does anyone know how
to fix it?

Thanks.

Quicktime for Windows Installation

Symptoms

Quicktime for Windows will not install.
ERROR: Quicktime for Windows causes the error “Call to undefined
dynalink”
ERROR: Quicktime for Windows causes a general protection fault.
Quicktime for Windows will not play movies.
Quicktime for Windows causes complete system failure

Cause
These problems are all usually caused by faulty installation
procedures. In the case of “Call to undefined dynalink” a call is
being made to an out-of-date DLL which, along with a general
protection fault, is a result of having multiple versions of Quicktime
for Windows installed on your computer.

Solutions
First delete all *.qtc and qt*.* files from your hard-drive that have
anything to do with video. There may be one or two files on your hard
disc that just happen to start with ‘qt’ such as qtdata.doc which you
may or may not want to delete. All of the *.qtc have to be deleted
and any qt*.dll files have to be deleted. If you just downloaded
Quicktime for Windows be careful not to delete the compressed file
which may have a name like qtwin.exe.

I. Installing from a CD or disks

Find the file setup.exe and double-click on it from Windows. In
Windows 95 you can simply type setup from the DOS prompt if you
want. The installation should work smoothly from this point.

II. Installing from a compressed file

One of the two cases below should apply to you. If neither does then
the version of Quicktime for Windows you have is out of date and
you don’t want to install it because it could cause irreparable
damage to your operating system:

Case 1: Version 2.0 through Version 2.02
a. Copy the compressed file, qtwin.exe, to an empty temporary
directory
b. Enter DOS and go to the directory that has the compressed
file. Example: cd c:\qtwtemp
c. Type the name of the compressed file followed by -d. Example:
qtwin.exe -d
d. Go back into Windows and from the file manager double-click on
setup.exe in the temporary directory.
e. When the installation program asks you if you want to delete
files, look at the directory. If it is the temporary source directory
which you just decompressed qtwin.exe in, select ‘Skip.’ Since all
files have already been deleted above, you should not find any
Quicktime files on your hard- drive that need to be deleted.
f. Installation should run smoothly.
g. Delete the temporary directory.

Case 2: Version 2.03 and higher
a. Double click on the compressed file from the Windows file
manager or Windows 95 explorer, qtinstal.exe for version 2.03.
b. Follow instructions.
