that allows reading/posting-in USENET groups;
preferably with threaded viewing...
There are some QWK, soup format and other things,
but I would like to avoid some complicated way to accomplish simple
task.
ANY SUGGEESTIONS ???
--------------------
I already tried -
1. NUPOP 2.10
(cool program! I am using it for email/telnet/ftp/news;
but it isn't convenient as newsreader because I need different
logins/passwords for mail and news and NUPOP does not have this option;
and it's not threaded; and it requires number of read messages to be
changed every time in settings for every newsgroup to be read, otherwise
NUPOP does not see new messages on newsserver and there are some other
inconveniences as well...)
2. Trumpet (v.100, 105, 106)
on-line news reader - it often freezes, it does not keep indexes of
files that were already read and I failed to post anything through at
all)... At first glance it looks something that you need, but results
are far from expected. Generally it sucks!
I did not try other software.
THough I am looking some reader working under specified conditions
NNTP, PPP (w/BOOTP).

Thank you!
Ed.
This in itself has no support for threading. For that, you'd need Yarn (I
don't remember the URL) or Crosspoint (http://www.openxp.de)
But that gets you in the soup (pardon the pun), which you were trying to avoid.
UKA_PPP in itself is an uploader/downloader for mail and news, not a reader.
Sam Heywood, who might possibly have responded before I get to post this, likes
PC-Pine.
WATT-32 includes news and mail applications, not sure what all in the latest
version, I have it in my bookmarks file.
WATT-32
But you might have to compile these yourself with DJGPP (32-bit C/C++
development system for DOS)
http://www.delorie.com/djgpp/
and it is a big download.
I don't know much about QWK, thought it was a message format used on BBSes.
There is Gnus which runs within GNU Emacs, and there is a version for DOS, but I
don't know if Gnus would work in DOS, and it is a big download, and too bloated
and complicated for DOS: really intended for Linux/Unix.

Try http://www.fdisk.com/doslynx/ .
That site has many tools for Internet access from DOS. Take a look at
http://home.t-online.de/home/K_meinhard/dlinks.htm
for further links to useful sites.

something did not work
right on my PC then. I guess I have to look into it again).
Thanks.

I think you have to make a decision first whether you want a program
for "light use" or a really sophisticated one that challenges the
limitations of DOS.
For light use I could recommend an old program READNEWS in conjunction
with the KA9Q derivate YAN. The advantage would be, that both could be
integrated with Nupop, YAN has the ability to communicate with password
protected newsservers, and even gives you a www text-browser. Readnews
is extremely versatile, it can be trained to understand any message
format.
Another possibility would be again YAN as an MTA and John Washington's
SNEWS and the menuing system OVERLORD. AFAIR Snews is threaded. I'm
quite sure this combination could be integrated with Nupop as well.

Hmm, are you sure? I believe to have read about a workaround in the
docs.
>and it's not threaded;
Well, that's true. The only DOS newsreader known to me that has a good
threading mechanism is YARN, but probably CROSSPOINT has it already in
the meantime, too.

Interesting, I never had such problems with it.
As usual, I don't have the URLs, but if you are interested I can send
them to you later.

Try NetTamer, it worked for me when I was using DOS.
