com port challenge

I having trouble with my COM 1 port on my Windows NT workstation (spk 6)
computer.

The mode command shows me no information about my com ports. When I try to
communicate with a serial device on com 1 (i.e. Palm cradle) through power
term, I get the "unable to open com 1" error.

I had this same problem on another machine and I fixed the COM port issue by
reinstalling NT. I really don't want to do that.

Does anyone know what files and registry entries are related to the com
ports? Perhaps a COM port file is corrupted and has to be replaced. I've
searched Microsoft's website but found nothing.
