Ok folks here's what my boot loader menu looks like:

Windows 98
Windows NT Server Version 4.00
Windows NT Server Version 4.00 [VGA mode]
NT (default)

Now here is what my boot.ini file looks like:

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Windows NT Server Version
4.00"
[operating systems]
c:\="Windows 98"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Windows NT Server Version 4.00"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Windows NT Server Version 4.00
[VGA mode]" /basevideo /sos

Now...can someone help me get rid of the "NT (default) choice on the bottom
of the loader menu...I've tried everything...even deleting the boot.ini file
and creating a new one. When I choose this one, it gives me the "your
ntoskrnl.exe file is missing..."yada yada yada but all other choices are
valid and work.

Any ideas??????

Sean.

In article <8vW06.48950$3j.44...@news1.gvcl1.bc.home.com>,

I am not sure why you get the extra item but I ahve an idea as to why
your NEW boot.ini file may not have worked.
This is because your system patition(which contains ntoskernl.exe) is 2
not 1 (as on partition(2))and this is why it barfs when you tried a
totally new boot.ini file (because the the new file looked for the
system partition in partition 1 wheras it is in 2)

Now for the original problem....
I assume you save a copy of original file .
Now make a copy and try to get rid of one line at a time related to NT
and see what happens.
For instance try to get rid of the last part which contains the
VGA mode and see what it does.
This may give a clue.

In Windows 2000 not having VGA mode is NOT an issue and I don't think
it is in NT4 either (I think you can F8 or soemthing).

OK, on a limb here as I am not taking the time to test this, but IIRC you
get the
> NT (default)
line displayed when the syntax of the boot.ini file is invalid for the
default= line.
You have

> default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Windows NT Server
Version
> 4.00"
but it should be
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT

Sean, Leave it there!
Its a back up in case a driver fails during startup,also if you experience
any problems with resolution
as I have in the past, Its going to be major hassle to get back into the
system.

He was asking about the line

not the line

It is not normal to see the selection

Try the below configuration and see if that works for you!

>>[boot loader]
> >timeout=10
> >default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT

> >[operating systems]
> >c:\="Windows 98"
> >multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Windows NT Server Version

4.00" /fastdetect

> >multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Windows NT Server Version 4.00
[VGA mode]" /basevideo /sos

p.s. Have you noticed your date is wrong, this couldn't have been sent from
the future could it?
