when I'm logged on, my modem is busy sending and receiving even when
"nothing" is happening. it sends about 1500 bytes per second pretty
continuously and receives about half that rate.

what is going on?

I'm running XP Pro.

Thanks, Ron

Apparently it was a virus. I had updated to Windows XP Pro, and there was
a period when my antivirus was not working (a few hours.) When I got the
antivirus working properly, I found 5 viruses, including a Backdoor Trojan.
After these were removed, the modem activity was reduced dramatically. Now
its ok.

I also updated to the latest downloaded USR driver, which caused the modem
to work poorly. When I went back to the Windows supplied driver for USR
(which is digitally signed unlike the USR driver downloaded from the USR
site) the modem started working beautifully.

Thanks.
