Hi all,

Currently using yrNews HD. It’s pretty basic. Anyone know of anything better? I only need it for reading/posting to text newsgroups.

Thanks in advance.

As most people said, most who use iOS Usnet readers use NewsTap payware
but, as nospam noted himself way back in 2014, Newstap is not "particularly
good"...
From nospam:
> however, newstap isn't particularly good.
> usenet is not a high demand thing and certainly not worth the effort
> to develop, so therefore the options are very, very limited.
From Lloyd Parsons:
> NewsTap isn't considered to be all that good by many.
From Wes Groleau:
> I would give up Usenet if that thing [Newstap] were the only way to get it.
To which Jolly Roger responded:
> Yeah I would hardly call it [Newstap] acceptable.
> It's bearable, maybe, depending on your stress level.
> The author is not receptive to suggestions for improvement.
> The most you'll get from him is lip service.
> How many years did it take him to finally fix cross posting?
Nospam wrote this about Newstap in 2012:
> it's rather poor.
> it still doesn't support crossposts and various other problems.
To which Jolly Roger responded:
> I wouldn't call NewsTap "very good". It does get the job done, but is
> missing some rather important features, and does some things in such a
> way as to make life harder than need be.
Where Wes Groleau agreed:
> I tried NewsTap. I was able to read and follow threads, but the
> interface was such that I decided I can wait till I get back to my desk.
> Frankly, I would find that [a terminal emulator] a heck of a lot more

etc.

Things may have changed in the interim so the OP should just try the
freeware and see if he likes it, bearing in mind that the Newstap freeware
is crippled in multiple ways (last we discussed this way back in 2015
anyway).

From David Empson way back in 2015 (things may have changed since then):
"Newstap Lite cannot connect to news.mixmin.net on port 563.
Its log shows an error "S1: 400 SSL connection failed"."

Furthermore, as I recall from that time frame anyway, the Newstap freeware
was also limited to something like a single newgroup (the OP should check
if that matters to him).

This is what nospam said about it way back in 2014:
> the lite version is limited to one group so you can test out
> the app to see if you like it enough to buy the paid version,
> which supports multiple groups.

In 2013, "John" and "zulu" both said they're using "yrNews" on iOS:
zulu said:
"I'm using *yrNews* to read this on my iPad3
You can certainly read binaries _headers_ OK, I just tried it!
I haven't tried downloading any...not my scene "

I haven't checked for iOS Usenet readers in many years, but maybe the old
Android apps from circa 2014 are ported by now to iOS where I list some so
that the OP can search by name in the iOS App Store...
- PhoNews or GroundHog.Groundhog Usenet Reader, by Zoldar
- News Reader, by John LI
- Android News Reader, by Pinenuts
- Leaf News Reader, by LeafNet
- Android Usenet Reader, by Ken Tsang
- Newsbuddy, by Wiesner
- Newsgroup Reader by Chinese Characters
- PhoNews Usenet Reader, by Grach

Although Lloyd Parsons said, of that list:
"None of which are very good at all. NewsTap isn't rated as all that
good by many of us that use it, but from my experience with Android,
nothing for usenet there is nearly as good. "

How good is the filtering?

You can color code posters and see if they show up on threads. You can
automatically mark posters as read. You can manually delete all posts by a
specific poster at a given time, but you have to repeat this action each
time more posts by them show up. I can’t find a way to preemptively prevent
specific posters from showing up in my feed. That might be a dealbreaker
for some.

I usually don’t find a need to killfile. There was one asshat on the iphone
group that flooded the place with OT Linux advocacy and weird discussion of
nonposters. Thankfully it has gone dormant.

There may be other types of filtering I don’t use that therefore I cannot
opine.

NewsTap works well for me. So I take it from your comment that yrNews is
not a viable alternative.

I find that Newstap is the only viable iOS Usenet client. Filtering is not
as good as with desktop clients, but it is easy enough to kill individual
threads, unwanted authors, or individual articles.

The only reliable Newstap filter actions are to set colors for various
criteria.

For macOS I use Hogwasher, and Unison as the mood takes me.
