The blog has an entry 8 months ago (about January) saying that there was
one last update to version 2.5.4 of the original iPad-only version of
Marvin, which supported iOS 5.
The universal version of Marvin (which runs on iPhone and iPad) required
iOS 6 or later from the point it was introduced. This app (and its free
version) are the only ones currently available in the App Store.
The old iPad-only Marvin is no longer available in the App Store. If you
had bought it before it was removed from the store, you would still be
able to download it, but if you didn't get it before it was removed from
the store, it is too late now.
Since this is a different app to the current (universal) one, the iOS
mechanism which offers to download an old version won't work.
You might like to contact the author and see if he would be willing to
make the old iPad-only version available again, or give you a redempiton
code for it, as it is the only one which will run on a 1st gen iPad.
Otherwise, you will need to find a different app which does what you
want and still supports iOS 5, or replace your iPad with a newer model
which can run a more up-to-date version of iOS.

Kobo requires iOS 7 or later, as do many other apps; there are some
(like Marvin) which support iOS 6 or later, but iOS 5 support is
increasingly rare.
They will soon be joined by a growing number of new/updated apps which
require iOS 8 or later.
Depending on whether Kobo ever had a version which supported iOS 5, and
whether they have allowed this mechanism, you might be able to get an
older version of the app on your 1st gen iPad, e.g. by getting the app
using iTunes on a Mac/Windows using your Apple ID, then downloading the
app on your iPad from the purchased list. If Kobo supports this, App
Store should offer to download an older version, since the current
version isn't compatible with iOS 5.
Unfortunately your 1st gen iPad is rapidly being orphaned in terms of
new/updated apps it will be able to run, because for many apps it is too
hard to support older versions of iOS without sacrificing the ability to
use some of the new features in later versions.
Even more unfortunately, the 1st gen is the only iPad which is so
constrained: Apple have said that the iPad 2 and all later models will
be able to run iOS 8.
