that's correct. pixel count is not everything.

that's very unlikely. the camera in the iphone 5 is *very* good and it
isn't that far off from some slrs.

the pixels were bigger, but that does not always mean better.
those old sensors were fairly noisy.
sensors have come a long way since the days of 2 mp sensors. the sensor
in the iphone 5 is backside illuminated, which reduces noise.
in other words, not only do you get more pixels but you get lower noise
too.

the pixels were larger but not necessarily lower noise (which is what
matters).

the lens on the iphone 5 is f/2.4 which is faster than anything on a
cybershot (f/2.8 from what i can find on dpreview) and even many slr
kit lenses (typically f/4-5.6). that means the iphone lens lets in more
light than a cybershot.
distortion depends on the lens, but the iphone has very little because
it's a fixed focal length lens. the cybershots had zoom lenses which
tend to have more distortion. refraction is how lenses work. without
that, there won't be a lens. i don't know what you mean about
artifacting from a lens.

then something must be wrong. the output of an iphone 5 is *very* good.
it's true you don't have a choice of lens on an iphone, but many 'real
cameras' don't either, with a fixed focal length lenses too (no zoom).
