According to a current Tip, "Open web pages side by side":

"Rotate iPad to landscape, then touch and hold a link and choose Open in
Split View. Swap the pages by swiping the tabs."

Except that on my iPad mini, I just don't see Open in Split View. All
the others are there (Open, Open in New Tab, Add to Reading List, Copy
and Share).

Am I doing something wrong, or does this only apply to full size iPads
and not to Minis?

split view only works with the ipad pro, air 2 or mini 4 (or later).

Thank you.

I suppose Apple are so keen it "keep it short and to the point" that
they don't mention these important facts...

apple mentioned it, not only in the above link, but at the product
intro and numerous other places.

When I touch the screen on the right and slide left, I get the News app on
my iPad Air 2. Is there a way of getting the split screen instead?

you can run any two apps you want.

pull down from the top in the narrow view to get a list of apps, then
pull out to half/half.

Check out 'iPad User Guide for iOS10', free from iBooks store.
Pretty good, although it refers to a non-existant Compass app.

It's certainly in the link you provided, but I'm not sure what the product
intro is. Now I come to search the IOS 10 user guide for split view, it's
there too - I suppose I should have looked there first. But there's
certainly nothing in the Tips app. I saw that and thought "That's clever,
I'll try that" and found it didn't work :-(
