I've several hundred photographs I want to transfer to my iPad. I have
spent quite a few hours discovering ways that don't work.

The obvious way is by iTunes but as far as I can tell version
12.10.10.2 no longer allows me to select a source from my own computer
but only assumes I am going to download from iCloud. There are lots of
pages on the Internet which tell me how to use iTunes to transfer but
they all describe buttons etc which enable me to select the photos
folders on my computer with which I wish to synchronise the iPad. I
can't find anything in my current iTunes which will allow me to do
this. I don't want to transfer so much stuff to iCloud so that option
is out.

I once had a transfer app which worked very well but over the years
changes of machines and iPads have caused it to go astray. I recently
installed the 'Transfer' app but after several hours of trying I have
not been able to get it to behave in the way that is described in the
instructions. I have reached the point where I am asking for any
relevant help or advice. Surely it is still possible but the only
question is how.

it's a lot more productive to discover ways that do work.

yes it does.

you're looking at the wrong pages.

knowing how to properly use a search engine is a useful skill. you
might even find actual step by step instructions from the company that
authored the app you're trying to use.

they are unnecessary and nearly all of them are scamware.

Was the transfer app you used *Photo Transfer App*?
<http://phototransferapp.com>

I use it regularly.

I also use several other methods for having images share between my Mac and iPad, but that depends on intended use for those image files. How are you intending to use these “several hundred photographs” on your iPad? Are you planing to edit them on your iPad or just have them available for display or slideshow?
If just for display see #3 below.

1: for single files and quick Tx I use AirDrop, but do not believe that is an option for Windows users.

2: The Apple SD card reader for iPad is a positive, never fail method of making a foolproof import to the iPad for RAW and/or JPEG files.

3: For sharing galleries/albums etc. I use SmugMug which mirrors images in SmugMug on my iMac, iPad, and iPhone. I can access individual images, galleries, or albums. SmugMug is also my tool for sharing links to photos/albums/videos on line.

4: Then there is Lightroom. since you have an Adobe CC account you should have LR sync between your Windows machine and LR on your iPad without it costing you any more than you are currently paying.

...and 5: Photo Transfer App

Obviously, but they are the ones presented by Google.

And that explains my problem:

Select “Sync Photos”, then choose an album or folder from the
pop-up menu.

That's what it is not doing.

If you can’t see Sync Photos, you’re using iCloud Photos to
share your photos and you can’t sync your photos using iTunes.

And that explains why, much more sucintly than you managed to do.

This one works. I have just discovered the problem was that I had the
iPad connected with a USB cable and the computer end of the app had
also connected by wifi. It turned out it didn't like two connections
even though it gave me the opportunity to select only one of them.

You referred me to it in the first place nd I have used it on my old
iPad. I have sorted out my current problem: I had connected by USB and
my computer had also connected by wifi. Even though I was allowed to
choose which connection I wanted to use, it didn't like having two
connections. Getting rid of the USB solved the problem.

I'm afraid not.

These images had been processed by LR and were no longer on a card.

The folders I wished to transfer came from all kinds of sources and
the only thing they had in common was that they were jpg files.

And now that I have sorted out the problem, that is my preferred
solution.

yes it very definitely does. i use itunes to sync photos all the time
without any issues whatsoever.

the problem is not itunes.

google is extremely good at ranking the pages with the correct answers
at the top.

the bigger question is why you failed to find the link below,
especially since it was the first hit.

actually, it doesn't explain your problem.

try it again.

unfortunately, you don't understand what it means.

hint: turn off icloud photos.

it doesn't work that way.

being connected to wifi has absolutely nothing to do with also being
connected to usb. they are two entirely different things that coexist.

this is yet another instance of you running into a problem of your own
making and blaming everything other than yourself.

i seem to recall you also had significant difficulties copying photos
from the ipad to the computer, doing all sorts of ridiculous things and
wondering why nothing worked. i

pads and iphones show up as ordinary digital cameras (or card readers),
so if you can manage to copy photos from your nikon d800, you can
manage to copy them from an ipad, yet for some reason, you failed and
refused to learn why.

that is *not* the problem.

For something as trivially simple as copying file to and from Windows
to and from the full visible iOS file system, please see details in:

o Is there any functionality the iTunes abomination does, for a dual-boot Win/Ubuntu PC that can't be done, better, WITHOUT iTunes?

Note: We are always discussing both read & write to & from the entire
visible iOS file system; not just limited functionality of the DCIM folder.
