I have a 2015 13" iPad Pro running iOS 10.1. When I opened my iPad
today, the Mail app was gone from the dock. It is not in any folder,
Spotlight does not find it, and neither does Siri.

First question: I always thought that Mail (like Safari and Messages)
cannot be deleted. What could have happened?

When I go to "Settings > General > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout",
the Mail app is not restored.

When I download Mail from the App Store, Mail goes through a setup as
if I had never used it before. When I try to set up my (existing)
Gmail account, Mail complains with the following message:

"Gmail is already added. This Gmail account has already been added
to your iPad."

And nothing else happens. Strangely enough, the Mail app that I
downloaded from the App Store can be deleted when you press and hold.

Second question: does anyone know how I can get Mail (with my Gmail
account) back?

Thanks much!

Have you tried Settings - Mail - Accounts to see if Mail is unticked?

You were right. It was unticked, which somehow made Mail dispappear.
I ticked it back, and Mail re-appeared. I wonder how it got unticked
in the first place; it certainly wasn't me. I also wonder why the App
Store would allow me to download another copy of Mail, if the first one
was never really removed.

Thanks for your help!

No problem. I encountered this helping someone stuck with problem accessing
mail on an iOS device within the past couple weeks. They were getting a
similar baffling message about already having the account set up or some
such. I was confused and about to give up when I thought it might help to
check into the mail settings. The Mail was unticked. Not sure how it got
into that state for them. I thought maybe accidental toggling when changing
other settings. But turning it back on helped. Your situation jogged my
memory.
