iPad Air Charger Gets Hot

Subject says it all-- gotta new iPad Air and the charger that came with
it gets pretty hot when charging the device. Is that normal?

I don't recall this happening with my iPad 2 or 3.

warm sure. hot enough to burn your finger if you touch it, no.

Not finger-burning hot-- but enough to get your attention, and a lot
hotter than wall-warts usually get.

I used it to charge my iPhone-- which of course draws less juice-- and
it didn't get warm at all.

It's compact. It'll get warm like that. Nothing to worry about as long
as it's not too hot to hold.

Maybe you are using the charger that did NOT come with the Air.

The correct one is rated 5 volts, 12 Watts = 2.1 Amps

it doesn't matter. ipads will charge on lower power adapters, it will
just take longer.

Good thought-- but that's not it. I had sold off the others before I got
the current one.

The adapter is the one in the box and is marked Model A1357 with a rated
output of 5.1 volts, 2.1 amps. The label says 10 watts rather than the
12 you mentioned.

That is why it gets hotter - it charges at the full 10 w design rather
than being designed for the Air's higher requirement. If your Apple
store is convenient they might exchange it for a 12 w charger.

a 12w charger would run at 12w and be slightly hotter.

UPDATE:

A family member had purchased an identical iPad Air at the same time as
I did so we have two of them.

The charger from the other iPad gets warm but not hot charging either
iPad. But my charger gets real hot charging either of them.

So I think the suggestion to take it to a nearby Apple store is the way
to go on this...
