I've never been harassed or "Nazied" in any way in any if the three MS
stores I've visited. The employees have always been courteous and
helpful, even if I wasn't always courteous in return. I've seen them let
unaccompanied minors play with the Xbox displays for ages, let adults
play chess on the Surface tables (or whatever they call them now that the
Surface tablets have co-oped the Surface branding) when they were
obviously killing time rather than shopping, etc. There are always bad
apples in any bunch, though, so I don't doubt it happens.

However, Apple seems to have very good quality control and
indoctrination/training to ensure there are no bad apples at its Apple
places of worship.

They are extremely good at getting their retail stores employees to
consistently follow the same standards all around the world, and those
standard are designed to make everyone feel extremely welcome at those
stores.

A while ago, some magazine had leaked parts of the
training/indoctrination manual wich had many very strict rules about
what words to use and not use etc etc.

If, on lanch day, Microsoft has bad apples that make the news, this is
really bad news because this is one of the times where the media really
do follow an otherwise very boring company whose only regular news is
some new virus or anti-virus being released.

First, why is it when people cannot make an intelligent argument, either for, or against they tend to attack the poster
personally ? Make your case, and accept that others have a differing view, and then move on.

Who really cares which is better, the Microsoft product, or the Apple one, it will finally come down to your own choice.

Me, personally, I use a PC running XP, and a Imac running OSX, my primary is the Imac. I have an Ipad <just ordered the
4> will give the other one to the wife, and have an Iphone 4S which is good enough for the time being.

In my estimation, the OSX operating system on Apple computers is far and away a better OS than anything MS can come up
with, and also don't have to get updates every Tuesday. Never had or wanted to have any AV software on my MAC and have
not had any malware or virii for the past 4 years, as opposed to my PC which has had numerous.

If that makes me an Apple fanboi, well, so what. I like what I like and I am sure the same is true for whatever you use
as well.

I have gotten a lot of good information from this news group over the years, especially when certain individuals post
pertinet information, instead of ambushing people who are trying to help.

Yes their are trolls, but the world has many of the same type that you come into contact with everyday, but the world
goes on, and medication takes care of the rest.

Some posters here do it for enlightenment, others for blood sport, and I understand that,as well as participate in the
blood sport myself on occasion, but I specifically come here to find answers to problems I have regarding technology I
use.

Talking about bad apples in any bunch, when an Apple dealer opened a new
outlet a few years ago they were extremely busy and had a ticketing
system in place before you could get to speak to any staff.

The woman in charge of the tickets was an extremely loud and bossy
individual and she completely put me off wanting to shop there.

It was a complete contrast to their older store, which was staffed by
folks with spiky coloured hair who knew what they were talking about and
very friendly too. Many a time I wanted to buy half the contents of the
shop.

Another blogger reported on obnoxious employees at a Microsoft store.

<http://www.marco.org/2012/10/26/an-alternate-universe>

Microsoft seems to think that the main purpose of a brick-and-mortar
store is presenting demos rather than letting people play with the toys.

Did we read the same article? Not well trained, perhaps, maybe even inept,
but obnoxious? I didn't see it in the article. What I saw was an Apple
fan who went to ridicule the other side, and found exactly what he was
intending to find.

The Surface specifically, it seems. Microsoft is stuck between a rock and
a hard place with this product, and seems to be trying to manage
expectations. It's too easy to assume by looking and playing with it that
it's running "real" Windows 8, rather than a version specifically made
for ARM processors. If MS isn't careful, many people may buy one only to
return it when they discover they can't run their "legacy" Windows
software on it.

Me thinks they didn't want people touching it for fear of it crashing.

I personally won't be buying Windows 8 or a surface tablet.

I'll stick with my ipad, Windows 8 will be 2012s answer to
Windows Vista or Windows ME. I anticipate lots of issues,
bugs, crashes, etc. I'm also not spending the $1200-$1500
required to buy the software to run this disaster of an OS.

I'll stick with Windows 7.

pardon the question, but when is the USA election this year ? Is it on
the 4th of november as it usually is, or is Sunday a "no no" day for
elections and it is pushed to the 5th ?

I watched the debates on CSPAN but have not watched any USA network news
in a couple of years.

(I assume CNN is going to have some sort of overdose of Sandy since that

Traditionally, it's the first Tuesday in November. This year, too, although
absentee ballots have been cast for a couple of weeks, and some areas permit
early voting.

That isn't necessarily true. Technically, election day is referred to
"the first Tuesday after the first Monday of November". Consequently, if
the first day in November is a Tuesday, it occurs on the 8th and not the
1st of the month.

Until December 12, 2012 when the calendar runs out and the universe will
be thrown into a great calendar-less Abyss where "second tuesday of
November" will never happen again, leaving americans with the same
president forever :-)

On dec 12, should only the very rich be able to afford the entry fee
into heaven ? Or should they subsidize heaven so that the middle class
can also afford to go there ? :-)

And who do you want to represent you at the gates of heaven ? A mormon
priest who will only let women in if they are in his binder ? Or some
cool non white non muslem dude who was not born in kenya ? :-) :-) :-)

Do you want heaven to be a well manicured republican golf course runned
by Donald Trump and managed by Romney which will be runned like the
"Apprentice" where every week, the Donald will tell someone "you're
fired" and send them to burn in hell ? (litterally)

Or a fun house run by Bill Clinton full of playboy bunnies running
around the pool, catering to your every whim ?

Well, ass-wipe, it's officially the first Tuesday after the first Monday
in November. They don't want it to fall on 1st November, for some reason.

The reason may be that Nov. 1 is All Saints Day, a major Roman Catholic
festival and a holiday in Catholic countries.

In some years the period between the first Tuesday in November and the
first Wednesday in December (when the electors met in their state
capitals to vote) would be more than 34 days, in violation of the
existing Electoral College law. So, the bill was amended to move the
national date for choosing presidential electors forward to the Tuesday
after the first Monday in November

Yesterday I stopped by the local JB HiFi store (an electronics retailer
in Australia and NZ) and while buying a toner cart, I enquired about
interest in Windows 8 since release. The helpful and polite salespeople
I spoke with didn't think there had been much interest, compared to say,
the latest triple A game release. There also seemed to be a lack of
interest in Windows 8 from Windows 7 users on non-touchscreen computers
(almost all the PCs out there), and I could only find a couple Windows
touchscreen devices on sale, with only one person trying one out for a
couple minutes, vs half a dozen trying out iPads, during my 20 mins in
store. Again a lack of interest by the public was expressed by the
salespeople I know.

I may be biased by my own disinterest in touch UIs encroaching on
desktop OSes, but this and other similar experiences recently suggest to
me less interest in Windows 8 vs Windows 7's anticipated launch.

Personally I'm not seeing any compelling reason to upgrade from the very
good Windows 7 on the desktop or laptop. I do think upgrading from WinXP
to 7 is a good idea, but there's absolutely no rush unless the user
requires one of the rare Windows 7 only apps, or the user is buying a
new system. Speaking of buying new systems, I anticipate many users I
know having issues with Windows 8 when they buy a new system. Yes there
are ways to access the old UI, but it's still going to confuse people
used to established Windows default UI conventions, IMO.

The problem may be compounded as well by the x86 based
'laplets'/hybrid tablet notebooks like the Asus Taichi. While I think
the Taichi is a cool system, the fact that it has a tablet mode
running an x86 version of Win8 and a Win8 start screen running on it,
I'm fairly sure it'll confuse a lot of potential buyers. I can just
see it now; "Why will my Office software run on this Asus tablet, but
not on Microsoft's own Surface tablet?"

I've used Win8 for while, and it really is a nice OS, but M$ is badly
handling the architectural differential of Win8(x86)and WindowsRT,
compatibility issues.

How is that even possible?

Electronic voting, if implemented properly (this includes a
voter-verifiable, machine readable, human countable ballot printed by
the machine) should be reasonably trivial to deploy since, even if the
machines are compromised, it will be caught by random verification of
the ballots, and outside of fraud, it will produce instant results.

Still, in Canada we just manually count everything and can still have
correct (but not binding or confirmed) results in hours, and a final
certified result in a couple of days. Sure, the US has more people, but
this is an ideal example of a scaleable system, more votes just means
more people counting.

Yup! Baseball in the USA is a great example of the "melting pot" in practice.

The series winning SF Giants had three game winning Venezuelans who
played their part, MVP Pablo Sandoval, with his three home runs in game
#1, Marco Scutaro who drove in the game #4 and series winning run, and
Gregor Blanco.
They also have Puerto Rican Angel Pagan; Buster Posey, born in
Leesburg, Georgia; Matt Cain, born in Alabama; Las Vegas born, Barry
Zito; from Charlotte, North Carolina, Ryan Vogelsong; Texans Brandon
Belt & Hunter Pence; Arizonan, Jeremy Affeld; Dominican, Santiago
Casilla; California born Sergio Romo, and Bay area local Brandon
Crawford, who are all part of that melting pot team, the SF Giants.

My response was somewhat simplistic, and neglected to add the exclusion
of Nov 1, if it falls on a Tuesday. So Tuesdays Nov 2-8 are all
possible candidates.

What part of what I wrote is not accurate? Martin was not armed.
Zimmerman did claim Martin attacked him. Zimmerman's injuries at the
time he was arrested do not match up with his story, nor were they
severe enough to justify shooting Martin. And Zimmerman's story of being
attacked is completely uncorroborated.

And where the fuck is it written that I have to be objective? You failed
to demand that Flint be "perfectly honest and non-biased" in his account.

The Mayan Calendar ends its current cycle on the 21st of December, not
the 12th.

All of the rest of our calendars will do just fine.

Thanks for this important correction. Means I'll still have to pay
bills due between the 12th and 21st. Shucks :-)

And it will also clash with Christmas office parties. "Sorry, can't
attend the office christmas party this year as I am attending the end of
the world party" :-)

Since Christmas wont happen this year, why bother with christmas parties
? folks should focus on end of the world parties :-)

BTW does the world end on december 20th at 23:59, or on the 21st at 23:59 ?

AKA, is the 21st the last full day, or is it the 20th, with the end of
the world starting on the 21st at 00:01 ?

Hey, it took a number of hours to shutdown the New York City subway, one
should expect it will take a number of hours to shutdown the universe.
Unless of course, the shutdown involves a simple ALT-CTRL-DEL and reboot
the computer simulation of the universe that we participated in.

No, the best was the mayor of Moscow offering to help americans practice
democracy and run proper elections. I guess the irony was lost to
americans, but for me, I found that SO funny :-)

One big difference between canadian and US elections is that many states
have many questions on the same ballot. Not just who they vote for as
president. They may have some local propositions, whether to repave main
street etc etc. This makes tabulating votes more complex.

In Canada, you have one box to check out of 4 or 5 candidates. No other
questions. That makes it feasable to still count by hand.

To bring this back on topic: I am suprrised Apple didn't come up with an
App to vote in the USA election :-) :-) :-)
