The fact that learning is better than being taught
may be something new.

Locus Maps is very nice where I use Avenza to read in historical image maps
from another century when teaching historical tours to small walking groups
and where I scan campus PDFs to create custom college campus maps for
parents.

But I didn't want this discussion to be only about maps since everyone has
a favorite ap that few people know about yet.

One thing I like with my Galaxy Note 9 is that it's powerful enough to
serve as a substitute for a laptop when traveling.

With a USB-C to HDMI cable you can use a TV as a monitor and connect a
Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, or a Bluetooth Presenter. You can also use
one of the Samsung docks to gain an HDMI port, two USB-A ports, and a
wired Ethernet port). You can also load a bunch of movies onto a MicroSD
card.

While my iPhone can do some of this, iOS doesn't yet support a pointing
device on the iPhone. And of course there is no MicroSD card slot. The
new iPadOS (now in Beta) finally does add mouse support though in Beta 2
it only connects, it doesn't do anything. iPad users have been asking
for mouse support ever since the iPad was first released. The new iPad
Pro has a USB port which supports a limited subset of USB peripherals
which is also something iPad users have been asking for for years.
Credit the success of the Microsoft's Surface Pro for these much
appreciated changes to the iOS for the iPad.

that doesn't run windows apps (or mac apps for that matter), making it
a very limited replacement for a laptop.

yes it does, and did in beta 1 too.

very few.

it's two different user interface paradigms. there is no need for a
mouse in a touch-based interface, except for those with motor
impairments and have difficulties in touching.

you got that wrong too. ios devices have supported numerous usb devices
since the beginning, including keyboards, audio devices, card readers
and many other devices.

nope. the surface pro doesn't sell well and has very little to do with
the direction of ios.

Does the TV carry the sound too or is that still no louder than the
phone can put out?

Actually it does work in Beta 2. User error on my part. The mouse
support is well hidden in Setup and requires several different setting
changes to enable it. But it work fine.
