I run Windows on my desktop, and Android M on my tablet. Is there a way to
mount a file share from Windows to the Android file system so that it
appears to be native to Android, and thus available to all apps?

Not that I'm aware of. Using apps such as ES File Explorer, you can FTP
files to and fro between your Android and the file share. But if, for
example, you want the Gallery app to automatically find all the
photographs in your file share, I don't think that can be done.

BICBW - and would be interested to hear from anyone who knows otherwise.

Not exactly the same, but I use Android application SyncMe,
that synchronizes according given rules
the chosen folder on Android and chosen shared folder on Windows,
via Wireless LAN over the local Wifi router.

But that presumably copies the files onto the Android device rather than
allowing apps to access them over the WiFi link?

Access them, of access their folder info ?

For the former, unless it would be a remote DB specific access,
it implicitly involves copying it.

But I have written it is not exactly the same as remote mapping,
so no complains it is not exactly the same can apply... :)

such mappping may need rooted device.

Yes, I'm aware that you didn't claim this did exactly what the OP
wanted. I wasn't disagreeing with you - but simply wanting to make sure
that I understood what you were saying.

In the example which I cited, the Gallery app seems to be able to find
pictures wherever they are on an Android device, and display thumbnails
- and then display the actual picture when you tap on a thumbnail. AIUI,
the OP wants to be able to do the same thing with pictures stored on a
network share without first having to copy them to the Android device.

Is this sort of thing possible with a rooted device?
