I am in the process of moving away from Chrome on Android because of the
lack of ad blocking (at least as far as I am aware).

I've tried Mozilla Firefox but it seems to be a real slug with major
problems when posting/editing in text boxes on web fora.

Dolphin has been recommended in the past, and does seem to fly along
especially with the JetPack addon.

However, although there is a lot of "information" about the Dolphin
adblocker on the web, the only way I can seem to load it is to get it from
the web site then side load it. It doesn't appear in the Play Store, even
though I got the adblocker for Firefox from the Play Store.

So -any Dolphin user here who can explain what is going on?

I used dolphin for a long time. I only stopped because it didn't have
an extra feature I wanted. IIRC I got their ad blocker from the
dolpin addons area of the browser settings, no play store nor side-load.

No much related to ad blocking, but worthy to consider
for serious work.. :

For small browsers and not the current Android
is useful to check TLS/SSL vulnerabilities
at https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/viewMyClient.html

E.g. My once favorite CM Browser or UC Browser
failed miserably on Android 4.3, but Chrome passed.

It seems like the big browser applications
bring their own current and safe
SSL libraries a/o certificates.

But tiny ones may rely on obsolete
and vulnerable ones of the Android.

Thanks - everything historical seems to indicate the browser should be
able to install it, but the latest help says

"To enable the Ad Block we follow the procedure below:

1. Install Ad-block add-on on this link: https://dolphin.com/lab/en
2. Enable Jetpack in Dolphin settings and enable Adblock add on Right Side
Bar."

It doesn't show up as an addon.
