HTC ONE M8.
Android 6 Marshmallow.

The backup settings are set to auto, but it never happened.

So yesterday I removed my Google Account>Restarted.
The phone prompted for a Backup account, I entered the detail'.

"I have read that the phone needs to be on charge and on Wi-Fi, and not used
for one hour".

So I did the above, left it for several hours, when I opened the phone I got
a permissions error regarding the Google Play Services App, I activated the
relevant permissions, it did not progress.

Left the phone on charge overnight but backup has not initiated since.

Why Google Drive does not have a "Backup Now" option is puzzling to say the
least.

Any advice would be appreciated, or tips n tricks, or which Apps need which
permissions to allow backup to be seamless.

What are you expecting to be backed up? If it's a purchase from the
Google Play Store then there's no need for a backup, proof of purchase
is enough. Individual programs tend to have their own particular way of
storing data, possibly not known to the backup software. I would expect
any decent backup to include my own personal added data - photos for
example.

Unfortunately I've not used Google drive on a phone.

Application data can be backed up on google drive. Some apps do a
separate backup, and also on google drive. Android can backup things
like the wifi passwords of the sites you use, automatically. Say your
phone breaks or is lost suddenly. Well, it can be set up with your own
configuration and data from drive, automatically, and easily. Yes, even
photos if you wish.

If the app developer doesn't make use of the backup service then its
data doesn't get included in the backup (sync). Google's apps likely
incorporate the backup service but you didn't say if that's the only
data you want backed up.

Click on "What gets backed up with Android Backup Service".

What you want is something completely different, like image backups for
desktops. On Windows desktops, you don't rely on System Restore to get
your disks back to a prior state. You get backup software to either
save image backups or logical file backups. The same for Android. Get
a backup app for what you want (full phone backup).

Firstly sorry for the delay in responding.
Thanks for your ideas, but at this stage I don't want to go down the route
of 3rd party Apps for backing up, I may have to?

I want to TRY to get the built in 'Backup - Reset App' to operate via Google
Drive.

History:
I have only used HTC smartphone devices, which prior to Marshmallow, backed
up to a HTC provided Dropbox account, I never had a problem with that method
when saving and restoring a full phone backup.

HTC now give a 15Gig Google Drive account for the purpose.

(I do have local backups to PC via the HTC Sync Manager, which I have never
had to use to restore to any of my devices, up to now).

I want to try to find out what is apparently blocking the built in App from
operating as it should?
