Is there any good newsgroup reader for Android?
I found Groundhog, which has not been updated in years, but seems at
least ok, and I found PhoNews, which looks good but demands separate
payments removal of ads and the right to post messages.

I use this one
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.piaohong.newsgroup

The free version does everything I need, but is ad/nagware. It hasn't
been updated in over a year, but it is very stable and feature complete.

Reminds me. I should really buy it and support someone who really knows
how to make an app that just works.

Not really.
Here's a summary someone wrote a while back to the same question.

I use Newsgroups Reader. It's usable but kinda sucks. It had potential,
but it hasn't been updated in a year and a half and the author's web
site appears to be abandoned.

Among the things I find annoying...

- filtering is primitive, only Subject and Author are available.
Creating a filter is tedious.

- ordering of articles seems to be random. The articles are listed by
their original date and author, not by the latest.

- switching between read and unread articles is a pain

- marking articles or groups as Read is tedious

- the groups list can't be re-ordered

- some of the fonts are so small as to be unreadable on my phone

- the program crashes sometimes.

I have found one single way of making it usable to me, which is to have
it show me Unread articles only, and to mark the group as Read when I
exit it. That wouldn't be my preference, but it's the only way I don't
feel like tearing my hair out after using it.

I'd be willing to go for the paid version if there were any indication
that the app was still being developed, but it looks dead to me.

I have not tried anything else, but from what I've read, none of them
are any better.

I briefly Beta tested "WizPar" before it made it to the Google Play
Store: unfortunately it will no longer work on my older (4.2.1 or
something) tablet (never used it on my Android phone). It seemed okay at
the time. You could try out the "Lite" version to see what you think of it.

Usenet Reader for Android is good. It's not free, but worth the $7.00 + or -.
