You ought to have a white left facing arrow just to the top/right of the
menu, which says "collapse side panel" when you hover over it ...

If you click the vertical "..." menu, you can use "add label" which
creates a blue flag with name of the label, then you can use the "<-" to
hide the side panel and the red pin disappears but the blue flag remains.
