Forbes: Fake Google Android Apps Are Actually Russian Spy Tools
<https://www.forbes.com/sites/thomasbrewster/2019/07/24/warning-android-malware-masquerading-as-pornhub-google-and-evernote-is-actually-a-russian-spy-operation/>

"The source of the malware apps is the blandly named Special Technology
Center, according to a report released Wednesday by Canada-based
researchers at the cybersecurity company Lookout."

"The researchers found STC¢s spyware hoovered up passwords and turned
phones into listening devices. The tool, known as Monokle, can record home
screens when phones are locked in order to scoop up passwords, snoop
through predictive-text dictionaries to learn the target¢s interests,
record calls and eavesdrop through the infected phone¢s microphone. The
malware has been targeting Android phones since 2016, with a spike in
activity early last year."

"It comes hidden inside fake versions of real apps, including Google
Play, Evernote, Skype, encrypted messaging service Signal... Lookout also
said it had some evidence STC was developing iPhone malware..."

Unfortunately, the article didn't say HOW the victims were infected.
