I am looking for technical details of barcode formats (all
types) for a programming project. Local bookshops have not been
able to help. Can anyone reccomend a suitable publication?

Well in that case I say it was best to go to the original source ...

If you're thinking of printing your own barcodes I highly recommend that
you get a copy of the standard for the particular barcode you want to
print. The standards organization for barcodes is the Automatic
Identification Manufacturers, Inc. The latest address I have for them
is:

AIM USA
326 Freeport Rd.
Pittsburg, PA
15238 USA

Phone: 412/963-8588
TWX: 315186 AIM PGH
FAX: 412/963-8753

The barcode specs are described in X5 (The AIM Uniform Symbology
Specifications). Some of the numbers in this group are:

X5-1 USS-I 2/5 (interleaved 2/5)
X5-2 USS-39 (Code 3-of-9)
X5-3 USS-Codabar
X5-4 USS-128
X5-5 USS-93

X5-X All of the above

There is a catalog which list many other sources of information for
barcode systems, magstripe and many other automatic identification
areas. The catalog is:

Automatic ID Resources Catalog

The catalog doesn't have a number so I guess they refer to it by name.
I have a price list but it's probably out of date. You should get a new
price list with the catalog.
