There are two problems: One is that he has trouble connecting. My
T-2500's are set to answer with PEP tones last. They MUST be set this
way since most of my callers use non-PEP modems, and have trouble connecting
if I set the modems to answer with PEP tones first. The problem this PEP
callers is having is that his uucico times out and starts to retry before
the connect occurs! There must be a long delay in calling out of Japan,
because local callers here connect via PEP just fine.
Is there something he can do to make the uucico timeout longer? or
maybe tell uucico somehow to only dial once for each specific poll?
The other problem is that he reports very low transfer rates. He reports
only about 450 cps. He reports that he does 1400 cps on a local connection
in his area. Similarly, I do much better than that on local connections
in my area (and on a long-distance connection with a site in Germany!).
Any ideas and/or suggestions will be appreciated.

Well, he could use my UUCP package (available from ftp.uu.net in
communications/taylor-uucp-1.01.tar.Z or convex.com in
pub/taylor-uucp/taylor-uucp-1.01.tar.Z; a few patches also at

You've probably checked this, but I don't want to miss the obvious:
are you sure it is uucico that is timing out, and not the Telebit?

I've been told that it is possible to make Telebit's work better on
international calls by changing some command parameters. The
particular magic string that was quoted to me was ``ATj6s36s120=12''.
I hope that this incomplete comment will prompt a Telebit guru to
correct it and fill in the details.

I once had to dial from the US to Germany to my T2500. It's set to send PEP
first; nevertheless, I had to set S7=60 to get a connection.

My home site reseau.macrofield.or.jp performs daily UUCP connection
from Tokyo to uunet.uu.net in Falls Church, VA via ITJ (0041) dialup
link. My T2500 is version 7.02 or something (not sure).

Putting many "\d"s in his site's chat script will solve this problem.
And he should use ATS50=255 to avoid responding to the V.32/V.22bis
tone. (This may be trivial, but he should enable echo suppression mode
(S121=1?).)

There's nothing much to avoid this problem. My average rate from
reseau to uunet is also about 480cps or so. One possible way to make
better connection is to change the internal resistor of T2500 to set
output level of the modem to the phone line. I currently set it to
-14dBm (using 100k ohm), while the default value is -9dBm or so.

If you are using HDB UUCP (e.g. is you have a Systems file), then
this can easily be done by adding delays to the modem dialing script
in Dialers. Delays are added using \d. A good example would be
a script ending with :
... OK\r \EATDT\T\r\d\d\d\d\d\d\d\d\d\d\d\d\d\d\d\c CONNET\sFAST
The \c at the end is needed, so that you won't put out an extra
CR which will casue the modem to drop the dial immediatly after
the delays. Each \d delay is 2 seconds (I think).

CONNECT-\c-CONNECT-\c-CONNECT
While expecting "CONNECT", this line will effectivly allow the caller
to wait 3 times as long, or dispose of 3 times the interveaning text
before giving up.

Just use the "alternate" syntax to send nothing and expect the same
string again on the timeout in question in the dialing script:
CONNECT-\c-CONNECT
Les Mikesell
l...@chinet.chi.il.us
Here's what my Dialers file looks like for Telebits calling overseas...
tb1200 =W-, "" A\pA\pA\pT OK ATS50=2DT\T CONNECT\s1200-\c-CONNECT\s1200
tb2400 =W-, "" A\pA\pA\pT OK ATS50=3DT\T CONNECT\s2400-\c-CONNECT\s2400
tbfast =W-, "" A\pA\pA\pT OK ATS50=255DT\T CONNECT\sFAST-\c-CONNECT\sFAST
You may also want to play around with S7 to chang the timeout on the modem.

Another method which is more adaptive is:
... OK ATDT\T CONNECT\sFAST--CONNECT\sFAST
The '--' adds additional listening time ( my guess is 30 seconds ) for
the connection to be established. This can be used for local calls as
well as for those which are slow to connect. The long string of '\d's
must play out before the response from the modem can be detected. The
use of '--' allows the computer to respond immediately.
If even more time is required, additional '--CONNECT\sFAST's can be
added and still not disrupt faster local calls using the same Dialer
script.
