Is there a source (book, paper, etc.) available that explains, in hopefully
great technical detail, how Internet mail works? We're trying to put mail
into place on a system which just became "Internet aware" (read: just got
connected). To date, I've got all of the documentation that comes with the
sendmail distribution (rfc's 819, 821, & 822, etc.). That's about it.
Thanks in advance.

If you're talking about THE Internet (that is, you can telnet, ftp,
etc.) I can't help you much, because it may be substantialy
different that the UUCP-based mail Aegis runs. But if you're talking
about internetworked mail where the stuff goes via UUCP, I would
recommend the following:
UNIX Communications by Bart Anderson, Bryan Costales and Harry Henderson,
Howard W. Sams & Company. Perhaps the most useful overall.
Managing UUCP and USENET by Grace Todino and Dale Dougherty,
O'Reilly & Associates. Great for installing news!
UNIX Administration Guide for System V by Rebecca Thomas and Rik Farrow,
Prentice Hall. Useful ideas for how to administer it.
Hope that helps,
Dave
