What causes 'mailq' command to be so slow?

I recently upgraded from sendmail 8.8.7 to sendmail 8.11.2 (along
with some other upgrades) and everything seems to be working just
fine except that the 'mailq' command takes a long time to respond.

There can be nothing much going on in the system. Nothing in the
sendmail queue.. yet it takes it 30 seconds just to respond with ..
"/var/spool/mqueue is empty"

Even if there is something in the queue, it might take a good 30
seconds or so to respond.

Mail seems to be processed quickly. Everything seems to be OK other
than the slow 'mailq' response..

Any ideas what is causing this? I am running Linux Slackware 7.1 with
a sendmail 8.11.2 upgrade but it also did it with 8.11.1

I am running with basically the default Slackware sendmail.cf
for an smtp connection.. except with masquerade set.

mailq should be a symbolic link to the sendmail executable. Since
you upgraded, is mailq pointing to the old exe or the new one?
