i have sendmail 8.12.6 running on freeBSD 4.7
it seems that everything is ok and i can send email
from an email client like KMail or by doing telnet
to port 25 and executing smtp commands one by one
but when i try to send a mail by:
#sendmail -v m...@yahoo.com < letter

i get this error :

m...@yahoo.com..........Connecting to localhost.mydomain.com via relay....
m...@yahoo.com..........Deferred: Operation timed out with
localhost.mydomain.com

what could be wrong?

Note: if localhost doesn't resolve to the IP address
of your local system (127.0.0.1 or ::1 for IPv6),
then you either need to fix your hostname resolution
(localhost and localhost.YOUR.DOMAIN should resolve
to that address by convention) or you need to specify
the IP address as argument, e.g.,

FEATURE(`msp', `[127.0.0.1]')

This belongs in submit.mc, not in sendmail.mc.

PS: this is changed in 8.12.7
