We get bounced mail from MAILER-DAEMON which is the result of a forward to
a bad email address. This obviously creates a loop.
How can we prevent this in sendmail, preferably without trapping all mail
from MAILER-DAEMON?
I've searched the FAQ and my copy of the Sendmail book and was surprised
not to find an answer.
>Hi,
It is customary to have MAILER-DAEMON being an alias for Postmaster and
Postmaster being an alias for a responsible person. Thus mail to
MAILER-DAEMON should never bounce. Therefore the loop would end right
there.
The alias file that is included with sendmail already contains these
aliases.

Thanks but there are a few wrinkles...
We have a large number of users on the machine. Bounced mail must go back
to the sender, not postmaster. The problem occurs when the sender has a
forward and the forward is to a defunct address.
It gets worse when the forward is through procmail because then sendmail
doesn't even do it's normal loop counting thing.
In other words we don't want to trap all bounced mail, just bounced mail that
is causing a loop.
