I tried to change the NNTP server in the pine configuration. I did the
following steps:

1. In the general configuration (keys M S C) update the entry "NNTP Server
(for news)" by entering the DNS name of the new NNTP server

2. In the folder collection configuration (keys M S L) replace the former

news.old-server.example/service=NNTP

by

news.new-server.example/service=NNTPS/ssl/user=thisuser

The addition of a user name is necessary because the new NNTP server requires
login. I expected a prompt for a password to go with the user name, as is the
case for user names in mail accounts. What happens is that the folder
collection opens without error but contains no newsgroups and does not allow
to subscribe to newsgroup because the set of available newsgroups is void.

The same happens when using NNTP instead of NNTPS, then also omitting the ssl
option.

Accessibility of the news server is not the problem. From the same computer,
the news server can be contacted via telnet (NNTP port) or via "openssl
s_client" (NNTPS port). In both cases, username and password can be verified
using "authinfo simple thisuser thispasswd".

The problem is that I have no chance of entering the password. Is there a
configuration option I failed to use properly? What have I to look for?

I found the solution: The /user parameter has to appear in *both* entries
(item 1 and 2 above). It is not obvious from the documentation why this
entry appears at least twice (with roles even more often).

If you'd added the user parameter to NNTP Server entry first, it would
have set it up in folder collections by default. You might wish to
enable Expose Hidden Config, which displays the result of the folder
collections command in the formatted display of the pine configuration
file.
