Slow to open compose window

I seem to have a new problem here. PC-Alpine runs under Windows8 and
any attempt to open the compose window, either for a new post or a
reply to a message, results in a long pause of 30 sec or so when
Alpine goes unresponsive. Once out of this pause all proceeds as
usual. Then future attempts to open the compose window proceed
quickly with no pause. So for some reason it only pauses on the
first reply or new message task. Nothing peculiar shows up on Task
Manager.
I am using an external editor (gvim) but loading that with no
scripts makes no difference to this problem, so there doesn't seem
to be an issue with e.g. _vimrc.
Any suggestions as to what might be happening?
