I have never been able to get the automatic password feature to work.
Following the examples given on the web:

I created the .pine-passfile. I responded yes when asked if it was to be
stored.

It has not worked. I have tried a couple of versions of alpine with the
same result.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Without knowing what you are doing, there is no way to help you, but
here is what you need to know about it.

* check that the version you are running has password file support:
the command

alpine -h | grep passfile

should return a non-empty string.

* If you passed the previous test, then you can run the command

touch empty_file

* now that you have an empty file, you can use it for password file as
follows

alpine -passfile /full/path/to/empty_file

* After Alpine saves the password in the file, you have to run the
previous command to use
that file as the password file.

Is this not working? if it is not working, what is it that you
observe that make you say that it is not working? (e.g., are you
seeing
that the password file works only in one session and not in the next,
or are you seeing that it works to open the inbox but not to open the
collection of folders which is in the same server or does not work to
send email?) please be specific so that we can help you.

Thank you.

The file by default is called ".alpine.passfile".
