Is there a utility that can trim a folder down to say the most recent 1000
messages?

Make sure you have aggregate commands enabled in your
configuration. Then sort your folder by Arrival if it is sorted
in a different order. Use an aggregate command by number range
to delete all but the last 1000 messages. If need be, use Whereis
to go to the bottom of the folder to find the last message number.
It takes longer to describe the procedure than to do it (if you are
skilled at Pine).

Why are you keeping such monstrously large folders, anyway?

$ then A
; then N then 1-top_number_to_be_discarded
A then D then X
