I would like to know automaticly what email client the senders are using.
Is it possible when reading emails with pine, to see the X-Mailer header?
And what is the Massage-ID header for ?
Thanks in advance
P.Ph.Braun
I'm also curious about what clients people use so I include the
following in my pinerc:
viewer-hdrs=INHERIT,
Message-ID,
X-Mailer,
X-Newsreader,
X-Mail-Agent,
X-News-Agent,
User-Agent,
Mail-System-Version,
Mailer,
Originating-Client,
I include these settings, and a lot more, in my Compartmentalizing
and Sharing Your Pine Configuration, which is here:
<http://www.ii.com/internet/messaging/pine/sharing/#pinerc-generic>
Someone just posted to comp.mail.headers that X-Mailer is
supposed to be used to specify the Mail Transfer Agent (MTA) so
it seems that clients should be identifying themselves in some
other header, if anywhere.
If anyone knows of any other headers that are used to identify a
client, please let me know.

Setup
Config
viewer-hdrs
Add in
X-Mailer
at a convenient point. For example:
viewer-hdrs = Date
From
X-Mailer
To
Cc
Subject
Gives me:
Date: Thu, 23 May 2002 19:06:34 -0500
From: John Q. User <j...@nowhere.nat>
X-Mailer: Sylpheed version 0.7.5 (GTK+ 1.2.10; mips-sgi-irix6.5)
To: le...@sgi.com
Subject: Eel racing.

Some sort of Pay-for personal Service?
Message-id is a unique identifier for an Email. ine just happens to give
the game away by including it's name, platform and version number...

That means that your viewer headers should include the ones that are
already normally included (To, From, Subject, etc).
If you didn't list INHERIT you would need to explicitly list those headers
in viewer-headers
