Hi,

Maybe it's an old question, but I couldn't find the answer in several
FAQ's I looked at, so here I am...

Is there a way to use Pegasus (I'm using 32-bit V.2.54 under win95) as
an "auto-responder"? That is, sort of "vacation" utility.

I mean, when I'm away I would like to set up Pegasus so that it just
keeps receiving and storing new incoming e-mail messages, but meanwhile
it automatically sends back to each sender a standard message that says
"sorry but I'm away" or something.

Got the idea? Thanks in advance to anyone who could be of help,

Corrado

Possible with Mercury (which is running on a Netware Server
or Windows PC and acting as a smart-host for mail), as
far as I know not with Pmail (a PC is typically only running
when your at home and is switched off when your on vacation).
See areply.pm on mercury.

Well... yes, IF.

IF your system is on the 'net constantly (like a true network
connection to the internet, or a cable modem, or some such), rather
than on a dialup, then you can use the filtering options to handle
this.

Just set up with a rule that sends back a text file when the "To:"
field is your email address. Put your "I'm away" message in that text
file.

Now, if you're on a dialup connection, and are actually connected to
the 'net only now and again, you're pretty much stuck, unless your ISP
can provide it for you on their servers.

This is not available with Pegasus Mail since the computer would
have to be up and running Pegasus Mail for this to work. There is
normally the capability of creating a .vacation or .forward file in a
UNIX account to send this type of message. Check with your ISP.
If you are running Mercury it can be setup using the AREPLY function.

But BE CAREFUL!! Many folks get carried away with auto-responding
and send messages on every incoming mail, including list mail,
which means everyone on that list gets a vacation notification.

That is not the way it should work, when a note is send to a list
the sender doesn't really care if John Doe is on vacation.

In personal mail, vacation messages are allowed, but you never know
who does receive the notification message. So if you can, please
avoid those messages.

Well, that's extactly the case.

That seems to be the problem. The rule gets activated only when the new
mail folder is opened, not when a message arrives. If I'm not there, the
new mail folders stays closed even when messages arrive, and the rule
never gets triggered, and the "I'm away" message never gets sent back...

As far as I know there is no way to trigger a rule "when a message
arrives". Am I wrong?

Thanks again,

What you need to do is set up WinPMail so that the new mail folder window
is open and the active window. Also, WinPMail must be able to connect to
your ISP periodically to download any new mail and send any queued outgoing
mail. The filter rules will trigger when WinPMail periodicaly updates the
new mail folder window according to the "New mail folder poll interval"
setting in the Advanced Settings options.
