Hi David,
Hope you don't mind answering a question from a perfect stranger, but I
saw your posting on the "UUCP" newsgroup and I thought, "Aha, here's a
knowledgable guy who can tell me what I don't seem able to find out
elsewhere!"
The problem is this: I'm trying to communicate via E-mail with some old
friends at Bell Labs from this rather clumsy DOS gateway into the Unix
net. (canrem.com is a commercial BBS I subscribe to, and they have a
Unix gateway. Now I can send messages out to the net by specifying the
recipient as soa...@thingy.com, or whatever, and presumably it will get
there. for mail back to me, the address is given Internet style, as
"bill....@canrem.com". So far, so good. But when I left the Labs
about five years ago, and I believe for sometime after that, people at
Whippany, Holmdel, etc. had to use bang paths on outgoing mail. Is this
still true? How would someone at (say) mtuno send mail to me? Is there
a special path they need to specify to get messages out of the AT&T Unix
system? I see messages in the various newsgroups from Murray Hill
(system "alice") and Columbus (who always seemed to have a closer link
with the USENET, for some reason), but I've yet to see any messages
posted from the Whippany Lab, or from Holmdel. I could probably figure
out a "bang path" from !att! to here if I had to, to pass along to my
friends, but it sure would be nice if there were an easier way.
Many thanks indeed for any help you can offer!
Regards,
