vms mail format

Hello, all.
I have a program which can be run successfully on the mail folder containing
newly-received messages. But it fails for those folder containing old
ones with time stamp 1988 or earlier. I am not sure whether the format
of vms mails was changed somehow due to system upgrade or some other reasons.
And if that is the case, is there a way to convert the old format to the
new format without resending the messages to myself? Any hint will be
appreciated very much.
