Can anyone explain to me in simple non-technical language, why it is
that Yahoo insist on sending me mail that is clearly addressed to
somebody else?

It has always been my experience that if I make the slightest error in
addressing an email, it comes bouncing back with a message from the
infamous mailer-daemon. However, it seems Yahoo have elected to send
me any email that nobody else wants.

This sloppy approach must be welcomed by spammers and virus
distributors. It makes their job so easy. Just invent any old
address and tack yahoo.co.uk on the end and it will find its way into
my inbox.

And yes, it's always either spam, a virus or both.

Does the yahoo mail server not have such a thing as /dev/null?

Google (or wikipaedia) the "Bcc" (Blind Carbon Copy) header.

Because what you see in the From:, To: or Cc: headers has absolutely nothing
to do whatsoever with the message's sender or recipients. The information as
to a message's supposed sender, and recipients, is carried separately, and
the headers are, for all practical matters, for informational purposes only.
I'll be happy to send you a test message that's addressed "To:
pres...@whitehouse.gov", if you so choose.

No, Yahoo delivers to you only mail that's addressed to you.

I can guarantee you that everyone else who has a Yahoo mailbox, or a mailbox
anywhere else for that matter, constantly receives spam with
randomly-generated From: and To: headers.

No. They may not have an effective spam filter, although.
