I sent 6 emails to customer service starting last Thurs through today
(Monday) with no response. Finally I called, and a customer service
representative said that since it was Thanksgiving, no one has been
there for 5 days. She said a server went down and only certain email
accounts were affected. (I wish the error message that kept popping up
would have just said this!)
Anyway, I was briefly able to check my email account after calling, but
to my horror all my Saved Files were missing. Now the Excite Inbox is
unavailable again. I have had numerous saved emails just disappear
permanently in the past, and they couldn't give any explanation. Now I'm
really worried though.
The thing that bothers me most is that I know someone who
had an Excite account and she was --- without warning --- permanently
blocked from accessing it due to some kind of error that they claimed
could not be fixed. They told her just to set up a new account with
another user name, but all those emails in the old one were lost.
This is a lesson to me about not saving more hard copies of important
emails, but I just trusted them to be there.
I was just wondering if anyone is having a similar experience with your
excite account? Are there any truly reliable free email accounts out
there. What about Yahoo --- any major problems with this one???
Thanks for your help.

You're getting exactly what you've paid for, with a free E-mail account.

I agree that Excite is usually not this bad about
being down for so long. My only other similar
experience was when they shifted to the new
excite inbox format and lost all of my saved
messages inexplicably and also temporarily lost
the ability to check pop accounts.
I've used Yahoo's mail a bit and like the user
interface and their spam mail filtering feature
(which Excite does not offer). Unfortunately I
have distributed my excite mail address so much
that I do not feel that I could change right now.
I guess we get what we pay for!
Good luck,

Did you have any luck with your inbox and getting your files back?

Hi --- Thanks for your reply. My INBOX is working again, but everything
I've saved for the last 3 years is gone. I called them at 1-650-556-5000
and they said that they would work on it.
Although I have an email address through my local ISP, I've used Excite
because I've moved around a lot in the last 4 years and wanted to keep
one permanent email address.
You may want to call the number I listed above and have them check your
account. They were very nice and apologized, but of course what I really
want is for them to find out what happened to all those saved emails! I
(foolishly) had some important stuff there.

I have my excite.com email set to be forwarded to my account at a local ISP,
and it's been coming through normally as far as I know.

Yahoo pop/smtp can sometimes go down for a couple hours, but their webmail
seems rock solid for reliability.
