Email delays

Hi all,

Anyone know what typically delays email in transmission from x to y?

I'm currently having problems receiving email delivery notification
messages - there's no problem actually receiving them, but the time
taken can vary from under 1 hour (yup, they're not from same/similar
isp's) to 5+days!!! How can this happen? surely the mail gateways
would send appropriate warning messages.....

I've been emailing without any problems to other sites, and I suspect
the destimation site aren't having too many problems either.


Add to this the fact that:
a) in the case of the 5 day message delivery notification time, I
received an independent message on about day 2 or 3 from that same
user, and
b) other delivery notifications for that same user for messages that
were sent AFTER that message, were also received within the 5 days.

How can this be?

Any help/advice/suggestions/comments would be appreciated.
