Long story, but I'm not allowed to use a mail client like Thunderbird
to read my IMAP mailbox.

Is there a way to download the entire IMAP mailbox into a mail format I
can read locally using a standard program like Thunderbird or elm?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, "HUH?" is the correct response to this question! We need to
know more about what you are not allowed to do. Are you not
allowed to use IMAP? Are you not allowed to access external
systems? Are you not allowed to use any mail client other than
some approved client? Are you not allowed to use GUI mail
clients? If it's the latter, then you should be able to use one
of the many command-line IMAP clients that can snarf messages.
One possibility is mailutil, which can be used on Unix-like
systems, including Mac OS X, and on MS Windows. I've written
about mailutil on my Power Pine page in this section

Using mailutil
<http://www.ii.com/internet/messaging/pine/pc/#mailutil>

I discuss other options in the section below that on that page,
which is called:

Using Other Sync and Snarf Tools

Be aware that you could also use any decent IMAP client,
including Thunderbird, to "download entire IMAP mailbox". Some
IMAP clients, for example Pine and its #move namespace, make this
easy and automatic.

Good luck,
Hope this helps,
Nancy
