Incoming/Outgoing password?

I don't get much Email (except for spam) so Hotmail serves
my modest needs. But every so often I have to send a mail
with some Spanish in it. Since Eudora gives me a spell
checker in both languages, I turn to Eudora for this.

Today I fired up Eudora 7.1.0.9 and composed and sent a
Email. No problems; the message was sent out.

Then I tried to check if there was any incoming mail piled
up, so I clicked the download mail button. Instead of
incoming mail I got a message that my user name or my
password was incorrect.

I can send mail but not receive it?!

I can't remember where to go in Eudora,to change a password.
Will someone please tell me, and also why is it that I can
send stuff but not receive it.

Thanks so much.

You forgot to say via what outgoing server.

Again, you forgot to say from what incoming server.

No one can, because there isn't anywhere :)

How many personalities have you defined?

Does any personality have an outgoing server
which needs a different password than an incoming server?

Since you've given no information
about your settings and personalities,
you may use the following to sort it out for yourself:

The more sugar, caffeine, or artificial sweetener,
the more tax, I always say.

Hmm... All versions of Eudora prior to 7 have the dialog:
Special | Change Password...
I checked versions
3.0.5 (32) Pro
4.2.2
5.2.1
6.2.5.6
And ... If you go into help in Eudora 7.1.0.9
Help | Topics | Find Tab | Password
Highlight the first entry that comes up and you get
Change Password...
Click on Display and you get this Dialog in Eudora 7.1.0.9

Change Password... (Special menu)

Displays the Password change dialog box
so that you can change the selected password.
This will only work if you have the necessary
software on your server.

Apparently this feature got broken or left out somewhere
in Eudora Version 7.x. I am not sure about Eudora 7 versions
earlier than 7.1.0.9? But, it is not in the last release 7.1.0.9.

Intended to change a password _at the server_
(rather than to replace passwords being saved by Eudora)
but virtually never implemented (on servers) by any ISP.

Its original code still exists in version 7.1.0.9,
but is suppressed by the default value of 1
for this new option: RemoveChangePassword

One reason for its being removed from the menu by default
is that although Eudora's developers originally contributed
several now common ideas and standards for email,
the world did not take Eudora's suggestion
to implement Eudora's own "password change protocol" on port 106;
the protocol was likely insecure and by now completely obsolete.

In addition, the "Change Password" menu function
has always been confused with "Forget Password(s)"

Various other obsoleted options and functions
continue to exist within Eudora, inherited from early versions,
but are also suppressed from the GUI in later versions.

Confirmed.
Adding RemoveChangePassword=0 to the Eudora.ini file
for Version 7.1.0.9 restored the Change Password...
Selection to the Special Menu.

However, as John states, this may or may not continue to work.

The following turns out to also be mentioned in the Release Notes
(no doubt buried in my subconscious, else I'd not have known):

CHANGES FROM 7.0.1.0 TO 7.1.0.9

Added <x-Eudora-option:RemoveChangePassword> for hiding the Change Password menu item
in the Special menu. It is on (1) by default, i.e. the menu item is hidden, because
there are very few deployments of the password changing server. Organizations that
have a password changing server will want to show this functionality.

http://www.eudora.com/download/eudora/windows/7.1/RelNotes.txt

Many other things are at their best only in 7.1.0.9, e.g.:

The Enter Password dialog was modified to show personality name, username, and
server to give a better idea of which account the password is being asked for.
Also, a checkbox to remember the password is now in the dialog.

Incoming and outgoing mail servers are now validated
when creating a new personality...

Added the ability to save search criteria via File->Save and open the search
criteria later via the menu arrow on the "Search" button. There is a new
"Find Messages Using" menu next to the "Find Messages" menu item to easily
call up one of the saved searches.

Added Edit -> Insert -> Downloadable Picture

Two options were added for the Eudora icon in the OS system tray...

The data and application directories listed in the 'About' dialog are now
clickable to open up an Explorer window to the corresponding directory.

Added a new menu item, Tools->Reset Tools, which resets
the toolbars and docking windows to their default state.

A "Recent" submenu was added to both the Mailboxes and Transfer menus, and a
"Recent" folder was added to the Mailboxes window. These locations contain the
10 most recently used mailboxes. A mailbox goes to the beginning of the list
when its window is opened up. The number of mailboxes to appear on the list
can be changed by a setting in Tools->Options->Mailboxes. Changing the value of
the setting to zero will remove the feature.

'Explore Attachment' now _selects_ the attachment file in the resulting Explorer window.

Of course, nobody hasn't yet upgraded and already enjoyed all these things :)
