Browser Default choice for Eudora

Dear All:

In mail readers, when a link is imbedded in an E-mail message, one gets
that link directly by just clicking on it. At that moment, any ThinkPad
immediately summons a browser to go on the internet, find that target, and
then display it.

Unfortunately, an historic legacy of my software, ages old now, is that
I at one time used Netscape as my default browser.

Unfortunately, I still use Eudora, which (unsupported these days,
another issue) has a legacy trove of over a thousand plus mailboxes and
countless E-mails going back to 1995 that I don't want to give up.

So these days, time after time in Eudora, when I click on a link a
colleague sends me, the ThinkPad passes the ball to Netscape (I now use
Firefox as my default browser). Netscape is mounted and can respond, but
it's slow and at times I loose Netscape; as if I dismount Netscape, I can't
get it back without rebooting, a nasty chore for other reasons.

What I need to do is to change things so that Firefox is the default
browser as far as Eudora is concerned (other softwares know better and uses
Firefox).

So, can anyone here tell me how to change the default browser (in
Eudora's eyes) to be Firefox. I'd even settle for Internet Explorer which
seems to be well-behaved these days, though I do prefer Firefox... I've
looked all over Eudora and Windows explorer, and can find no hint at all.

Thanks in advance for whatever info you can offer....

I forgot to say:

I use Eudora 5.2 (paid). The chatter against version 7 scared me away from
it.

(FYI re capacity, at 5,000 IN or OUT messages, I rename and start fresh.)

Not good enough to spoof XP.

That one, in detail, did the trick!

Thanks,

Jim Higgins then supplied:
"Setting Firefox as the default browser does not work" [Firefox Help]
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Setting%20Firefox%20as%20the%20default%20browser%20does%20not%20work

I think you have thereby learned,
since the above fix had nothing to do with Eudora,
but was through Windows [XP] only,
that your first assumption above was a myth,
and that Eudora has no idea nor influence of its own
about your default browser,
but just lets Windows choose for itself.

That's myth #2 ;-)

OK... I hear you. Some explanation, if I may:

"Rob": "Thunderbird has the ability to import your Eudora mail. It is a
quick
and painless way to save your old mail and still have an up to day client."

Me: "All well and good, but I don't change these days unless there is a
compelling reason.

"Eudora, lastly 5.2 Paid, has been a wonderful E-mail platform for me for
over a decade. I balked at moving on to V 7 because of some bad comments.

"The only criticism I have of Eudora is that it can boggle when mailboxes
get
too big, causing a reconstruction exercise. For instance my IN box, despite
pruning along the way, goes beyond 5,000 entries and 10 megs. The attachment
file has become enormous, already switched once. Similar for "OUT". So what
to do? I now have over 1,100 mail boxes. Fortunately V5.2 has a useful
search engine, so that every day I find groups of old messages to
better-file.

"So, if I were to switch to MozThund, would I be gaining in
capacity and capability, or would I rather be just breaking in another
Mustang, destined for time wasting that I do not need?"

What are your comments on my rolling into my E-mail future? I'm running XP
Pro.

Unidentified comments present an obstacle to further discussion
(as well as possible de-mythification :)

For anyone clinging to versions up to 5.2.x and not yet "Paid,"
here's a free "Paid" code for you, from Qualcomm,
to bring you up to Angelo's ideal version:

http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/2759hq.html

Now that you've all got 5.2.x "Paid,"
you've still got less in features, enhancements, and numerous fixes
than version 6.2.x in "sponsored" mode ;)

For those of you still clinging to versions 6.x-7.x in "sponsored" mode
(which has been ad-free since 2007 with hide-able empty "Ad" window),
the very first Google search result for a Eudora Registration Code
should provide a "Paid" code for you, too, which you can copy
from the search result, not even needing to view the source page.

Substantially improved, right through version 7.1,
including automatic In/Out mailbox backups, capacity increases,
and significantly greater crash resistance
(the latter according to Katrina Knight).

This is no substitute for better In/Out mailbox management and archiving,
but free seat belts and airbags are still comforting :)

> The attachment file has become enormous, already switched once.

Do you mean attachment folder? Switching to a new attachment folder
can cause incorrect, unintended "associations" between new messages
and old attachments and vice versa, may also "break" some associations
when some actions are attempted -- this is one of the fundamental weaknesses
of an architecture which "separates attachments up front,"
which is one reason why no newer programs than Eudora default to doing that.

Eudora's "Find Messages" was at some point
made much faster than before, even without paying,
and here's what you missed by not purchasing version 7:

http://www.eudora.com/email/features/search.html
(this even fails to mention the optional easier search syntax of "X1"
which can avoid needing to expand to clunkier multiple lines of criteria).

Other features:

Version history for all of versions 6.x and 7.x:

Eudora (even older versions) is compatible with even Windows 7,
so there is no compulsion to change, but Thunderbird and "Thundora"
(a colloquial name for "Eudora OSE") provide both benefits and losses,
in terms of features and capabilities, as does Windows Live Mail
(Microsoft's replacement for the retired Outlook Express,
available for XP and all later versions of Windows),
and of course any alternative "cloud" product (e.g. Gmail,
whose free IMAP permits relatively easy transfer of mail
from older personal clients).

Reminder: Eudora must be properly installed on Vista/Win7/Etc.,
which means (a) using the actual installer, and
(b) _no mail or user data in 'Program Files' folders_
(a pre-Win2K habit which should have stopped a decade ago).

Apparently this was a version 6 improvement:
