The "spool" directory itself is for files relating to the otherwise
unnamed "Dominant" account, and named subdirectories of "spool"
refer to named personas.
When it comes to moving from an old house to a new house,
instead of making twenty trips back and forth,
to pick up just one thing at a time from your old house,
then realizing that you've still forgotten something and need
to go back again, it is far less trouble to get a single big van,
and pack everything at once, making just one trip!
One single disk directory (your Eudora "data" directory) is that van --
by copying that one single thing, all that it contains comes along with it,
and if you place that single van load where it belongs at the new house,
Eudora starts up at the new house running exactly as it was in the old house,
with everything in place, not missing a beat.
The simplest approach seems to me, therefore:
o Use 7.1.0.9 installer (DO NOT COPY PROGRAM FILES) to install on Win7.
o Use default "program files" location as suggested.
o When asked for location of mail and settings:
- "User's Application Data Folder" is best location on Windows' drive.
- Otherwise create an empty folder on another drive.
- DO NOT CHOOSE THE PROGRAM FILES AREA!
o Launch Eudora after installation, dismiss the setup wizard.
o "Help" > "About Eudora"
o Click on "Data" path to open the "data" folder
(data may not be where it was in XP!)
o Terminate Eudora and leave "data" folder open.
o Copy ENTIRE CONTENTS of old "data" folder to new "data" folder,
- even if any old program files are included (they won't be used!)
o Start Eudora, watch it "hit the ground running."
Small details may be useful afterward:
o Install third party Eudora plugins you were using, if any.
o There is a patch for SSL which speeds it up.
o If you were using "X1" feature then copy "x1lib.dll" from old computer
(recent installers do not contain this Eudora program file)
o Disable Eudora from testing whether it's the default email program;
set this instead using Windows' [my] default programs.
o Disable use of MAPI by Eudora unless vitally necessary
(Win7 is made to fight to the death against anyone but Outlook using MAPI :)
How many times in the future will we need to repeat this same info?
Was there ever a Eudora FAQ? Well, there should be!
