Want to switch ALL personalities to Windows 7 from XP

Hi, I've read quite a bit about transferring Eudora from XP to Windows 7.
It seems simple...just copy the old files over the new ones.

In Eudora on my XP system, when I go to Help/About Eudora and click on "C:
\Documents and Settings\Application Data\Qualcomm\Eudora" the folder comes
up that is suppose to hold all the info.

I have three email accounts (personalities.)

Within the "C:\Documents and Settings\Application Data\Qualcomm\Eudora"
folder, there is a folder named "spool." Within that folder I see only two
of the three email addresses listed. The one I don't see is what is my
main email address which is called "Dominate" according to Eudora.

Is that located somewhere else within the spool folder under some kind of
different name? Or is it listed somewhere within the "C:\Documents and
Settings\Application Data\Qualcomm\Eudora" folder?

I just want to make sure when I copy the everything within the "C:
\Documents and Settings\Application Data\Qualcomm\Eudora" folder,
everything including my main email address (and the rest of my email
addresses including all the Properties) also gets copied and moved to the
new operating system.

And by the way, is there any reason to copy everything that's in the "C:
\Program Files\Qualcomm\Eudora" folder on the XP machine and put it in the
new Windows 7 folder location where the new operating system is? Normally
I would think I would want to if I want to keep all my options the same as
they are on the XP machine...unless of course, that has nothing to do with
it.

Thank you,

The "spool" directory itself is for files relating to the otherwise
unnamed "Dominant" account, and named subdirectories of "spool"
refer to named personas.

When it comes to moving from an old house to a new house,
instead of making twenty trips back and forth,
to pick up just one thing at a time from your old house,
then realizing that you've still forgotten something and need
to go back again, it is far less trouble to get a single big van,
and pack everything at once, making just one trip!

One single disk directory (your Eudora "data" directory) is that van --
by copying that one single thing, all that it contains comes along with it,
and if you place that single van load where it belongs at the new house,
Eudora starts up at the new house running exactly as it was in the old house,
with everything in place, not missing a beat.

The simplest approach seems to me, therefore:

o Use 7.1.0.9 installer (DO NOT COPY PROGRAM FILES) to install on Win7.
o Use default "program files" location as suggested.
o When asked for location of mail and settings:
- "User's Application Data Folder" is best location on Windows' drive.
- Otherwise create an empty folder on another drive.
- DO NOT CHOOSE THE PROGRAM FILES AREA!

o Launch Eudora after installation, dismiss the setup wizard.
o "Help" > "About Eudora"
o Click on "Data" path to open the "data" folder
(data may not be where it was in XP!)
o Terminate Eudora and leave "data" folder open.
o Copy ENTIRE CONTENTS of old "data" folder to new "data" folder,
- even if any old program files are included (they won't be used!)

o Start Eudora, watch it "hit the ground running."

Small details may be useful afterward:

o Install third party Eudora plugins you were using, if any.
o There is a patch for SSL which speeds it up.
o If you were using "X1" feature then copy "x1lib.dll" from old computer
(recent installers do not contain this Eudora program file)
o Disable Eudora from testing whether it's the default email program;
set this instead using Windows' [my] default programs.
o Disable use of MAPI by Eudora unless vitally necessary
(Win7 is made to fight to the death against anyone but Outlook using MAPI :)

How many times in the future will we need to repeat this same info?

Was there ever a Eudora FAQ? Well, there should be!

Where did you read that?

That's the single most common cause of all "Eudora problems"
on Win7 (and on Vista before that, and likely on Win8 coming next)!

o Install BRAND NEW program files, using ORIGINAL INSTALLER,
- and while installing, choose OTHER THAN PROGRAM FILES AREA
- for new location of mail and settings.

Copy all old "data" to a generally NEW LOCATION for new "data."

Your "options" are all in file "Eudora.ini" in your "Data" folder
(the only way they end up in a "program files" folder
is if the "data" and "program files" are combined,
which is a NO-NO for Win7)

Thank you. Yep, I found it and all the information seems to be there.

As far as any "paths" that might be different between XP and Windows 7...is
the folder I've chosen to have the attachments sent to originally in XP.

When I do make the switch, I'll be carful to create a folder that has the
same "path" for the attachments. However if for some reason I'm not able
to do that (since I have no idea how the directory tree is made up in
Windows 7,) my best guess is I could simply create a new folder for the
attachments within Windows 7 that Eudora can follow.

Under "Options/Attachments," there's a clickable bar as to what's called
the "Attachment Directory."

Now a new concern is when I do make the switch (and open Eudora for the
first time,) and lets say a email arrives that might have an attachment
(and the path is not the same as it was in XP,) what happens to the
attachment? Of course after that, I would be able to fix the Attachment
Directory path to something that will work in Window's 7.

Thanks for the very detailed description. It does seem to be much of the
same described elsewhere within this newsgroup. However there does seem
to be one or two details that's new (at least to me!)

I have no idea what the "X1" feature is. The version of Eudora I'm using
is 7.1.0.9 Do I really need that file? How do I know I'm currently
using that?

And wow, It's been so long, I don't remember having to let Windows know
Eudora is my default email program! So I take it, using this "Windows
(my) default programs" is something related to Windows 7?

Under MAPI, I currently have it set to "Use Eudora MAPI server" to
"Never." So I guess I won't have to worry about that.

> How many times in the future will we need to repeat this same info?

I guess as long as people don't take the time to read. I had read most
of what I could find, and that's why I titled the message that
pacifically had to do with the personalities.

> Was there ever a Eudora FAQ? Well, there should be!

I think there is one...and the link maybe listed somewhere within the FAQ
or Readme files that came with Eudora. I think I visited it sometime
some years ago. Though I don't know for sure where I remember seeing the
URL for that.

By the way, there is the issue of "Secure Sockets." Currently all my
personalities are set up to "Never" under "Secure Sockets When
Receiving." So I hopefully won't have to worry about that little "bug"
in Windows 7.

I should have been more detailed. I should have said, I read it's the data
files that need to be copied into the new data file folder.

Thank you. That was another main concern.
